Pogue takes on VHS-DVD recorder combos

David Pogue

In his latest New York Times column (yeah, we meant to hit this the other day), David Pogue takes a look at combo VHS-DVD recorder units, reviewing four models that are available at street prices between $285 and $350. While you won't find any machines that can do dual-layer, multiformat burning, what you will find is evidence that these boxes are now becoming as mainstream as non-recording VHS-DVD units. Of course, we see these as a transitional technology; once you've transferred all of those old VHS tapes to DVD, there's not much use for them. By then, however, you should be ready for a new unit that'll rip the DVDs to Blu-ray or HD-DVD. Ah, progress.
