That way if a few days go by between 'keepers', disk space isn't used up - files get overwritten/deleted after the standard archive time.

There are lots of audio recorders that will only record when the level is above a threshold, but I don't know of any that will overwrite old files unless prompted.

Bryhawks

Comments on HOW-TO: Turn your laptop into a home security system

Or, if you want whip out yer Treo and check out what going on then this is for you:

http://www.firepad.com/

Mo

Comments on HOW-TO: Turn your laptop into a home security system

Or, if you want whip out yer Treo and check out what going on then this is for you:

http://www.firepad.com/

Mo

Comments on HOW-TO: Turn your laptop into a home security system

Im using Activewebcam

Steve

Comments on HOW-TO: Turn your laptop into a home security system

@Jeff and D - yes, both do multi-cam support. Reviews on the Evocam are that it handles this a bit more elegantly than TinCam, so if you need this on the Windows side you might want to look at a more high-end software package that focuses more on multicam support (there are a bunch of solutions out there).

EvoCam also handles wireless cams, and as far as I can tell TinCam does not. Again, you'll have to look a bit higher up the software spectrum on the Windows side for this.

@Nuno - Using TinCam, you can just turn Auto Capture off from the Capture menu and it will stop all motion sensing. Using EvoCam, you can just quit the app - it saves your settings.

@Al - really good idea, not sure if any of the software solutions out there support "seeding" the detector. :) Does anybody have any dirt on face-recognition technology on the consumer side?

barb dybwad

Comments on HOW-TO: Turn your laptop into a home security system

How about using one of those $100 wifi cameras that were all the rage a year or so ago?
