Promptu voice-controlled TV remote

Promptu voice-controlled remote

So AgileTV was talking about this a year ago and it looks like they're finally busting it out: a TV remote with a built-in microphone and talk button, allowing you to control your TV with voice commands. The Promptu remote has you push the "Talk" button and speak your command, which it sends via infrared to a small run-time application in the set-top box. The actual voice recognition step is performed at the local cable providers's head end on Linux PCs, and a response is returned in about a second, including a screen prompt indicating whether or not the command was understood. Some stock commands include changing the channel by name or number, showing program options in 75 pre-defined categories, and searching for available programs by actor. The Promptu is currently in a trial phase by Comcast and Time Warner in the Philadelphia area. We're a little bit skeptical that they're going to get this right on the first try, and we doubt it's going to be saving anyone much time to have to hold down a Talk button and speak a command to change a channel when the old button method is likely faster — but once they start tapping in to making more complex keypad procedures available in a word or two, it might end up actually being useful (and potentially satisfying) to yell a few things at your TV now and then.
