Seagate introduces 120GB Momentus laptop hard drive
Seagate has just introduced a 120GB laptop hard drive, which it claims is the highest capacity laptop drive to date and the first Serial ATA unit for laptops (not that we don't have any reason to doubt them). It may be the biggest, but it sure ain't the fastest, spinning at just 5200 rpm. If you want to run at a full 7200 rpm you'll have to settle for Seagate's 100GB model (oh, the sacrifice), although its high power consumption will probably rule it out for most users. Both models are part of Seagate's Momentus series of drives, which also includes a 120GB model running at 4200 rpm. Pricing information wasn't immediately available.

Nice drive, but can it replace the drive in the Mac mini. Now that would be a cool upgrade.

Depends if ATA/100 interface is available. I'm also interested in the Momentus 5400.2 mentioned in the article, its a 250GB @ 5400rpm drive that would make a nice slim external hard drive.

"Fujitsu already has a 120gb laptop drive"
Did you even bother to read the article you linked to?
"The MHV2120AT will be available to laptop manufacturers this May, the company said."
Last I checked, we're in April right now. Seagate is the first company to offer a 120GB laptop drive, being that they have them on the market, you know, right now.

In regards to the 7200RPM notebook drive, I'll believe it when I see it. They announced it almost a year ago, too, but it never made it to manufacturing:

My 7k60 is laughing at you
Spectre @ Dec 19th 2005 2:14AM
Yea, my Hitachi 7K60 has been happily spinning at 7200rpms for a year #5 you TOOL.
DavidA @ Dec 19th 2005 2:14AM
Thanks Spectre and hafa. I knew I should've put a "100GB" before I put "7200RPM" in my post. I have 7K60s in both my Sager 3790 and 17" AlBook. I think the Momentus will be quieter, however, along with having another 40GB of space. I'm looking to trade up.

I have the Hitachi 7K60 as well as the Momentus 5400 100GB laptop drives. Both are good. Hitachi is making the 7K80 and whenever they get around to it, you'll see Seagate's 100GB 7200 Momentus. The 5400 100GB is about $200, which isn't bad.
