Tiger is worth every single penny and I for one have already placed an order for it on Amazon since they are offering a $35 discount. I was already prepared to pay $129 as its extremely affordable for what you're getting but add a discount, you'd have to be retarded not to go for it.

Apple software is always worth supporting in my opinion. They do things right and deliver some of the highest quality material out there.

Microshit on the other hand can go to hell. I wouldn't touch that garbage if it were free. Which is exactly what I did; I won a Dell system at a raffle; I sold it the very next day. Apple's update schedule with 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4 is like if you actually got Windows 2000, 2001, 2002, etc. We get major feature improvements every year to eighteen months. Drop the leading "10." and it makes more sense (it's a marketing thing).

Tiger does not have as many end0user features as Panther did, but the under-the-hood advancements are simply mind-boggling. Go check out CoreData and CoreImage to get an idea of some of the Tiger-only apps we'll be seeing in the next several months. Personally I'm going to hold off upgrading for a while - Panther is running just fine for me.

That's always an option - you don't think the features are compelling? Well, don't upograde then. There was a time when computers were made to be useful, not to be another advertising delivery tool.
I'm thankful that Apple has kept the reins tight, because it has insured that there will be an alternative to Microsoft's Wal-Mart (win at all costs, quality be damned) approach.
It's common to hear auto analogies for the major operating systems - the Mac is a BMW while MS makes a Chevy. I'd say those are only half-right. The reason there isn't the rampant piracy comes from 2 characteristics of Apple.

1) Lack of Market Share
2) Apple Computer Users

1) Lack of Market Share - the fact that there are so few users prevents the number of websites supporting downloads of Apple software. The limited number of torrent sites, as this is the only efficient way of downloading a 2.5GB file, often get shut down when they distribute large amounts of Apple software.
Besides, there are only a few major sites where you can find decent rips of anything.

2) Apple caters to 2 types of users, power users and beginners
The beginners, people like my parents, will never pirate Apple software because they don't think to do it, beginner users will pay their money, be happy with the software and move on.

The power users, or "Apple Zealots" might end up downloading the software, but many love Apple so much, they buy it anyways. Regardless, Apple is a HARDWARE company and only sells its software to maximize the efficiency of its hardware. Even if you download their $129 operating system, you still pay $2500 for your next laptop when Apple offers the next big thing making their money anyways.

And in reply to #11, if you can compare MS SP 2 to Tiger than good luck. Microsoft doesn't give you a new version of Outlook, Search System, Chat Software, Internet Explorer, etc... They update your software to protect from viruses and other security risks, and if anyone believes SP 2 does any different, I would love to hear it.

I already paid my money for Tiger, and I've dowloaded Apple software before, but my needs for a multimedia computer running UNIX with style suits me better than Microsoft.

I've used a Media Center PC before, and the implementation is very poor. First, unless you have the latest hardware, it eats up your system resources rendering almost any other task on the PC useless.

Second, you are extremely limited on the types of media you can use. I'm not trying to say that Apple give the user free reign on playable media in Quicktime, but the universe for Media Center PC's is very limited.

Media Center PCs are difficult to set up, use, and enjoy for the average user because although accessing the content is not that difficult, getting it on the PC can be a nightmare.

I like that Microsoft has taken a proactive step to develop a media center PC, but they jumped the gun without evaluating how they would integrate Music, Movies, and Pictures Together.

Apple doesn't provide you with the interface that Windows does for media, but anyone can use the iApps without any computer skills, and they all integrate together.

I don't know enough about Tiger to know exactly you're getting for your upgrade dollars, but I think it's ludicrous to buy a new OS because of the new software they happen to include with it. Why not just offer the software enhancements separately for a small price? I think money is the answer.

Why is MS sued for bundling a browser that can be downloaded for free when Mac users have to buy a whole new OS to get the latest features and enhancements? Either software is allowed to be bundled with an OS or it isn't.
