The head of this company made public comment that fueled much of the belief the console wouldn't have a hard drive and would use his company's product in its place. It isn't where in the Xbox 360 design this class of flash device would figure in. The memory cards are only 64 MB(and greater upon market demand presumably) and would hardly need that kind of performance if a serious cost penalty is required. Will the system have a massive firmware space? Or did the deal fall apart and a plain old conventional hard drive become standard?

Eric Pobirs

Comments on M-Systems 176GB Flash Drive

thats 90 thousand pictures on a 4 megapixel camera...i work at circuit city and haveta do these kinda calculations at will. hope this helps someone

evox

Comments on M-Systems 176GB Flash Drive

This thing is awesome...

www.mygadgetbag.com

Comments on M-Systems 176GB Flash Drive

HINT: PalmOne

THIS is what you need to be in a piece to "manage media".

Oh and work on that implementation too.

Casual Observer

Comments on M-Systems 176GB Flash Drive

I checked in on this thread, looking for the doofus who'll inevitably write "This is what the Palm LifeDrive should have." At least that is where I saw the sarcastic humor heading with it. Again, I could be wrong though.

Anyway, back on topic, this drive is pretty amazing. I don't think the original article was making a comment about the recent Newsweek incident but rather referencing the military spending "scandals" of the mid-late 80s.

Some of the purchases truly were examples of contractor gouging, but others were not. The one that comes to mind (and I don't remember specific numbers or sources) was outrage over the Air Force spending a few hundred dollars each for a bolt. As it turned out, the bolt had to be made of a special alloy because it bore the entire weight of a multi-million dollar fighter on landings. In which case, a few hundred bucks for a bolt is pretty darn cheap.

However, there were a few things like $640 toilet seats and $800 hammers that were just contractors padding the bottom line and hoping nobody would notice. I don't remember if anyone in the military was found to be in collusion with the contractors as was the case more recently.

Conan The Libertarian

Comments on M-Systems 176GB Flash Drive

To: Hug-me

"someone explain that to me please - because I don't understand and I stand by my last posts - I'm sorry if you don't see it from my view but I just find it wrong"

I'll go out on a limb and take a stab at RESPECTFULLY elucidating.

(of course the following is all 'IMHO')

Yes, making fun of people's religion can be a cruel and callous thing and is quite often hurtful and based in a malicious intent. But I think in this instance and in many others humor is employed as a coping mechanism. Some things are easier to deal with if you can mitigate the horror of it all by seeing the humor in it.

This works for some people, but obviously not for others. If anger and indignance is how someone copes with horrible circumstance they can't change well...that's their perogative (sp?). But as for things that CAN be changed, or things that one might want to WORK at changing...well...I've found you get more work out of someone whose enjoying themselves in the pursuit than you do out of someone who's just pissed off. Eventually their anger usually burns out and they cease to make forward progress. But those who work joyously tend to see the job through.

I dunno, maybe if we all learn to LAUGH together we'll someday learn to LIVE together. It can certainly be said the whole of mankind knows how to take offense,to hate, and to rage together...but I can't see that that has made the world a better place...

One final thought...

"I understand taking the piss out of the US military"

There are quite a few people/families in the US with a long history and tradition of military service (this does not describe me). To some of these poeple, perhaps even to many, serving in the military is what they hold sacred...in effect you could say that it is their religion (this also does not describe me). You aparently do not agree with the military, it's practices, or it's policies, just as anyone can disagree with someone elses religion on those same levels. And yet you aparently sanction making fun of the military. Perhaps you can explain to ME how the one is ok, but the other is not because to me it ammounts to the same thing...disrespecting, or at least making light of (personally I think you can respect something and make jokes about it at the same time) what someone else holds sacred.

This last part is not at all a ridicule, I'd be genuinely interested in how you explain this seemingly contradictory rationale...

(me steps off soap box)

To the topic at hand:

I've heard that flash memory has a limited life and that after so many write operations it basically 'breaks' - is that going to be a serious factor in the longevity of these EXPENSIVE flash based drives ?

To: 'David'

Agreed, the Sharp Zaurus as well. I'm kind of surprised though, I forget what company it is that's now offering a laptop with a ~16gb flash based drive, but it only supposedly yielded a 10% battery life increase. I would have hoped for more...

OddManOut

Comments on M-Systems 176GB Flash Drive

why are people so touchy? i enjoyed the little article. and whatever anyone says some of what the military has spent money on is propesterous. and, yes it would not be at all surprising if the military did spend an obscene amount of money on a toilet seat. well i enjoyed the article as i said earlier.

hussein

Comments on M-Systems 176GB Flash Drive

#12: You are correct, appearently Hug-Me is too busy crying with his victim mentality to grasp the concept of sarcasm.

Hug-Me: I would look into getting some selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors... you clearly need some happy drugs. You make a lot of good points and I’d like to address them with as much care and respect as you have done. (I’m abbreviating your paragraphs so this monstrous post isn’t 4 pages long)

”----- Sadly, some things are beyond humour,.... I don't know if you have anything sacred but it doesn't work for everyone…-------“

To this paragraph I would reply that I personally don’t think ANYTHING is beyond humor. But I also don’t think humor simply means jokes and jibes. I think humor is really all about attitude. I for one prefer to find joy where I can and not to focus on the negative things in life. And I agree, such is not for everyone, and even for those you also seek to remain positive, my personal approach to that goal is not going to work for everyone. But, to each their own. I respect other peoples right to conduct themselves as they will.
I do indeed have my own religion and beliefs and it most certainly is sacred to me.

”-----Who said I was angry, I don't understand what you are saying. You sound really patronising…”

As to who said you were angry, until you did in this quoted paragraph above…no one. My comments were made as general statements about human nature, and were of course just my opinion. I neither stated nor implied YOU were angry. I’m sorry if you got that impression. It seemed you asked a general question, and so I gave a general answer.
But now that you have stated you ARE angry, I won’t argue with your feelings of anger and outrage at the atrocities we see in war or your RIGHT to those feelings. In large part I share them. But as to not letting them pass…well…I dunno. The bible (the holy book of my religion) is designed to be used for ‘teaching, for reproving, and for setting things straight’ and it teaches me/us that we must always be ready to make a defense of god and his sovereignty. I take these responsibilities serious, as I’m sure you take the responsibilities of your beliefs seriously. But I feel that sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. Bible characters did not always go head to head in shouting matches with those who disagreed with them, because some people just love to argue and were not really seeking deeper understanding of anything. Arguing with them and trying to teach them would have been a waste of time…at that moment…sometimes people change so there is always hope. But I personally feel sometimes no good can come of arguing with certain individuals and it’s best left alone until/unless they decide to approach it with an open mind, an open heart, and a civil spirit. Much as we are doing now (I hope :) ).
As for being patronizing, such was not my intent. Perhaps you have misunderstood something I have said or I phrased something poorly. If you’d care to elaborate I might be able to restate something more clearly.

”-----Right, patronising again, I'm sorry that's how I feel. You are saying I am angry I will not get anywhere…”

I don’t think you need to apologise for being angry. I don’t really think anger is wrong in and of itself and I didn’t mean to give that impression. I agree, as long as the injustices you mentioned and all the others exist in the world there are some very good reasons to be angry. What I MEANT however was that I didn’t think anger made a very good motivating force, and as I have already stated that I DID NOT say YOU were angry, I certainly wasn’t making any assertions about YOUR potential for success or failure. I find anger to be a completely understandable emotion to react to an injustice with. But I think that untempered anger is destructive if it is the long running and overriding drive in a persons life/actions. I think that if you hate, and are angered by, ‘injustice, prejudice, racism etc’ you probably love justice, peace, community, brotherhood, respect, etc a whole lot (am I right ?). And it is the LOVE of THESE things that I think provides the drive for far greater success than a motivation in hate and anger alone. Though again I will restate, anger has it’s place. The Bible does say ‘Hate what is bad, Love what is good’.

”------ I laugh at some aspects of my culture - NOT religion - because of the people in it. But events like these aren't funny. I can laugh at myself but some stuff is serious and should be respected…”

Here I think we simply have some differences in opinion. You obviously deeply respect your religion, it sounds as if it is an intrinsic part of you. Such is IMHO quite commendable and increasingly rare in this world. My own religion is the entire focus of my life, and thus is something I respect and take most seriously indeed. But I don’t think respect has to preclude humor or even jokes. If when you speak of ‘making fun’ you are refering to the malicious intent in someones heart I would agree, such is inappropriate, but I think if you are simply ‘having fun with and in’ your beliefs and your service to whatever deity or divinity you serve…well…if you’re not hurting anyone else (knowingly) I personally don’t see any harm. Again, I think we simply have differing opinions here. And I can definitely respect yours.
As for people needing to ‘realise that they shouldn't say these things’, I think that’s rather subjective. But if you mean they should not knowingly say these things in a manner that will give offense…I would definitely think that would be the way a person should conduct themselves…

”--------I understand - but what I meant with I understand you taking the piss out of the military is that as an organisation and the whole concept… “

If I’m understanding this paragraph correctly you are saying you understand why people satirize things and institutions that don’t make any sense or ARE hypocritical or contradictory in thought and theory, but that you respect and take very seriously the realities of loss that come from those institutions. I think here we agree quite well. No rebuttal. IMHO the circumstances that bring about tragedies can be ridiculous and asinine and perhaps appropriate subject matter for jokes and jabs, but not the tragedies themselves. If that is what you are saying, I agree…

” You say apparently - you assume - so its not definite that I feel that that. I don't sanction this and am not being a hypocrit. I mean it is…“

You point out my use of the word 'apparently' and to the fact that I made assumptions. Both are true. But, I use the word 'apparently' to draw a framework AROUND an assumption, I basically say 'apparently' to communicate the fact that I acknowledge my assumption might be in error, and thus to preface my request for confirmation of that assumption

Eg ‘apparently you feel xxxxx, is this true and if so why do you feel that way’

I phrase things that way so that I don’t have to straight up accuse people of things which I don’t feel is my place to do. I do it as a gesture of respect and humility (is THIS what you found patronizing) . Apparently (hee hee) my efforts in this area were ineffective this time, and for that I apologize.

”I don't think it is contradictory, as the military were in the wrong. “

Well, as for the apparent contradiction, you’ve cleared that up.

” I also think it is ironic that the military are peacekeepers but they don't fully understand and respect other beliefs and religions. I don't think that this can be considered a religion, yes I respect the fact it is important but can you really go that far?”

This is a very interesting statement and question. I also think keeping peace through force is a rather dubious endeavor (but I don’t think there is any other terrestrial solution). But if you are asking me if **I** can really go so far as to consider the military a religion. Well…no. **I** can’t go that far. It is not up to me to decide if

OddManOut

Comments on M-Systems 176GB Flash Drive

Can anyone think of any real military uses this would go into?
