iPodLinux project develops video player for the iPod
This is sort of still at the proof-of-concept stage (and is, of course, totally unsupported), but it is working for
all iPod models save the iPod mini 2G. The video player from the iPodLinux project will do 24-bit, uncompressed AVI
files at iPod-native screen resolution only. You can download the binaries and the test video via the Read link.
[Thanks, Tom]

Ha ha ha....This is so funny - Now Ipod "the best" users can get to watch grainy video without sound on their pods after "tweaking" it for 1 hour! Wow!
It just so happens that cheap flash based MP3 players coming out of nowehere can play 24fps video with sound already....
Crapple
That's a little harsh for a proof of concept for something that the device was never intended to do...
Then again, I'm not about to start tweaking :o|
There are also digital cameras which can be loaded up with video clips and played back on their LCD screens, with sound!
I think it's fantastic that this works on every other iPod other than the 2G mini! Finally, my iPod Shuffle will realize it's full potential! ;)
I think their chart is wrong in indicating that the 4Gs are supported, since this software would seem to require iPod Linux to be installed and that still doesn't work on the 4Gs (yet).
Actually, iPodLinux is working on the 4G (albeit without sound support, so there's not much point) but it's completely unsupported. Meaning you have to compile everything from CVS and if it breaks, there's nothing to do but wipe the firmware and start over.
this is going to be a n00bish comment but i cant seem to get the video playing. WMP tells me that theres codecs missing, since its an avi i went to divx, which tells me its codec is "FOURCC Code '0' " and a seartch on that tells me its a fake video. then it tells me "virtual dub" will open it, but it doesnt, says the file i corrupted, "it expected 40906 bytes but only got 5020" WTF
this is so dumb. Portable Video.. LAAAAAME..
get one of those oh-so-hot-selling DVD Players and be done w it..
Bill Gates is wrong.. portable video is lame, lame, lame.
Sony, portable video is wrong!
It's about the music, stupid.
piemaster: easy, you're download of the video must have crapped out before it finished, meaning your file is incomplete. Try redownloading it.
iPod 4G linux is easily achievable. Follow these instructions: http://www.ipodlinux.org/4G_Installer and then ENJOY. It works on my 4g, it'll work on yours too.
Can't wait to go home and try the video out and then blow away all my other iPod having friends who don't keep up with iPod linux, or believe its not useful.
totally worth it for the picture of the penguin listening to the ipod.

A link to it working on the iPod Photo. I think it seems to look quite reasonable considering the functionality not being pre-installed and this could have some potential if they develop it further. I'm impressed with the screen quality, but I can just imagine that the battery will be hammered (if slideshow + audio gives roughly 5 hours)
anyone have any success with the video ipod?
First- aegray is awesome for doing this. I don't even want to think how many hours he spent on this.
Second- There is audio support for 4g's, but only wav's and such.
Actually, there is full audio support no 4g. In fact, the music support on 4g is a lot better than others, as it can play 320kbps mp3 perfectly.
well...the problem is that this site :http://ipodlinux.org/Video_Player
dosent open anymore...and once when i got a chance to open it......i found out that it was so so so complicated....that i couldnt install the software....someone help me with this....i got a nano 4gb
