Steve Jobs' Stanford Commencement Speech

jobs on death

Henceforth known as Steve "Doom and Gloom" Jobs, Apple's CEO in the process of giving the commencement speech yesterday at Stanford University declared: "Death is very likely the single best invention of life. . . . It's life's change agent, it clears out the old to make way for the new. . . . Right now, the new is you. But someday, not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. . . . Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life."

He also mentioned that if he had never dropped out of school, he would never have taken calligraphy, and "personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do." Continuing down the same comparative road, he mentioned that if he had never been fired from Apple, he would have never started Pixar, noting that "It was awful-tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it."

Is it just me, or does this speech boil down to "turn that frown upside down"? Read the article linked below to catch more of his speech and several of the students' "bummed out" reactions.
