GBA emulation is quite processor-intensive. Unless these coders are able to overcome basic emulation requirements that have been in play for the last several years, we won't be seeing truly playable GBA games with sound on the PSP. It will not work on anything later than 1.5. But before you get too excited, I have tried it, and, though it does work, it is not something you'll want to do more than once. It requires you to swap one DUO (holding a dummy file) for a second DUO (holding the real file) immediately upon hitting X to launch the file. ZSnes for DOS ran full framerate SNES games on my Pentium 66 with 32MB of ram. Arguably, the PSP is quite a bit more powerful than this... And when ultra HLE came out, it would emulate many N64 titles pefectly on a Pentium 200Mhz with a voodoo card. Arguably the PSP is as powerful as this machine as well. Heck, even though it was a commercial failure, Bleemcast! Proved that even PSX emulation on the lowly Dreamcast was achievable.

Keep in mind that emulator authors have always liked to push the limit in terms of what is achievable. Most modern SNES, GBA, NES, etc emulators written for 3+GHz computers are written with very general purpose code because authors don't have to resort to time consuming and esoteric optimizations to squeeze every bit of speed out of the code. It's just not necessary anymore.

The PSP, though, unlike a modern PC is not two or three orders of magnitude faster than these systems though, and since these early emulators running on the PSP are generally ports of PC based emulators, they dont have the performance optimizations and speedups necessary to get full framerate out of the code yet. All that stuff has to be put *back* and that takes time. The PSP's graphics systems aren't all that well understood by the hobbiests yet, so keep this in mind because it means that there is another whole processor sitting there doing basically nothing at this point.

The most recent emulator that really impressed me was PocketNES -- it uses many tricks to achieve full speed NES emulation on the GBA -- things like offloading NES sprites to the GBA's own sprite engine (rather than just drawing to the framebuffer)

I think that with the widespread deployment of the PSP you will soon see a lot of good emulators on it in time -- possibly up to even PSX emulation (but there only due to the architecture similarities), and N64 (due to well understood HLE emulation on the platform) but doubtful you'd see anything Saturn/Dreamcast or better ever running...

John Laur

Comments on Game Boy Advance emulator for PSP

Getting the swap trick to work is a pain in the ass.
