The volume was barely adequate at it's highest setting and seemed to fluctuate with signal strength, which on average was also weak, about one to two bars less than other phones. Loved everything else about the phone, especially the user friendly layout, appearance, and features. However, since I could barely hear the people on the other end most of the time, and combined with the poor signal strength (D.C. area), I took my VX8100 back and exchanged it for the Motorola e815. It has good signal strength and more than sufficient ear piece volume (although voice clarity doesn't seem quite as good)...but the user interface is maddeningly complicated by comparison and the phone looks and feels old and cheap. I might take it back and hope for better luck with a different VX8100. After two weeks of using it, she started to complain about some bugs and problems with the voice command. I tested her phone and also found it buggy. Then I was surprised to found out her address book was only half full. I asked her what's up with that and her response was "it's not the best phone I have ever owned" so I stopped inputing numbers. The next day we went to Verizon to exchange this for the same phone thinking it was only the phone? The saleslady said that this phone has had some returns and she personaly wasn't a big fan of Motorola. She recommended the LG Vx8100 for many reasons and just traded her Samsung in on the LG 8100. She told us she loved her Samsung and never thought she would ever find a phone she liked better! She showed us how to disable the EVDO to 1X because we live in a poor signal area and said this will save extra battery life. I can't tell you how much my wife loves this phone. It is so easy that her address book is now complete and the voice command works every time and she thanks me every day for driving her back to Verizon for the exchange. If you like simple interface and user friendly phones, this is the best choice!!!

Donald Rathjen

Comments on

I bought the E815 and two days later bought the VX8100. Sound quality on the E815 is absolutely terrible. Although multimedia features are nice, isn't the real reason we have these gadgets so that we can talk to people on them? Using a headset, speakerphone or regular mode the person on the other end sounded like they were in a tin can with too much bass. I literally had to keep asking the person to repeat simple phrases that can be distinguished clearly on the VX8100. The E815 is too bulky as well. Both have their advantages and disadvantages such as the VX8100 being more crippled (bluetooth) and terrible signal reception on the VX8100. Camera on the 8100 is actually downgraded from the 8000 (different rendering technology used on the 8100). I have owned both phones, used all features on both and read both manuals cover to cover. I can honestly say that the VX8100 is a better all around phone for me. The way a phone feels and looks is important to me and the 8100 wins in this area big time. On the 8100, 15 second video's can be used as wallpaper on both internal and external displays. This is just a cool feature that the 815 does not have. The aluminum? screen on the earpiece of the 815 literally hurt/irritated my ear while talking on it. Hope this helps. YES. If you have read this far looking for that answer then you've found it but you've read too far.
>I'll confirm that you just need to change the file extension your MP3s to mid. That’s pretty much it. First I dropped the memory card (512MB) into my 8100. This created a file structure (a few folders). I am still waiting on my data cable (eBay purchase) to xfer files so in the interim I just dropped my mini SD into a Melodistik (using the full size SD adapter), copied the renamed MP3s into the My_Sounds folder on the memory card and stuck the card back in my phone. Bring up your main menu (OK button), go left twice to GET IT NOW tab, hit ‘1’ or OK again for option #1 (Get Tunes & Tones), then press ‘3’ or go down twice and hit OK for My Sounds and voila… Your MP3s now show up in the folder. Scroll down and press play. This is kludgey for sure but it works. I haven’t gotten the outside buttons to work yet. Can’t wait to get my data cable and try BITPIM.

I'll check out howardforums when I get a chance to see if there is a better way once I get my data cable and look into getting a firmware upgrade.

Voice dialing… pretty slick. – quick editorial comment… Some people just can’t figure things out and worse they can’t or choose not to read… end of rant. – If you can’t find your manual you can download the PDF... just google for it. > Voice dialing on the 8100 is very different from the Moto phones I’ve had (most of which had cool features, but sucked bad in terms of OS reliability and durability). Instead of having a limited number of Voice Dial numbers where you have to record the name (audio string) as an entry to the selected Name/Number and then the phone attempts to match the spoken pattern to the recorded pattern… the LG actually has a Voice Reco type of search & match. You just press the Voice Dial button, listen to the prompt (it would be great to have the flexibility of turning the prompt off) and say “Call” or “Call Someone” (alternately you can also just hit the VDial button and then hit OK because “Call Someone” is already highlighted. When prompted with, “Please say a name.” You merely do just that and generally get a few choices. I've had great success with this.

The digit dial can work pretty well when you are driving as well. You can rattle the numbers off … all ten digits … at a normal pace and the phone does a great job with the Speech Reco for me (male with a fairly neutral mid-Atlantic accent).

One irritation is that I cannot set T9Word as my default method of text entry so I have to change it EVERY TIME. What a pain in the… I just dumped Cingular because their network sucks and the customer service model (how to make / keep a happy customer) is severely deficient and they stuck me with a Moto which lost the outside display and shorly thereafter lost the inside as well. Moto is still junk (V60, T720, V220… I miss the reliability of the plain Jane Star TAC… feature poor but very durable). This is my first LG and I’ve been told they are reliable and well made and the review are generally good so I’m hoping for the best. Good luck all…

Earlier I said that you read too far… i.e. Howardforums.com has been mentioned above more than once and it is the place to go for just about any question although it pays to look around at other sites. I’ve had great success finding what I was looking for there for many models over time.

T

Stone

Comments on

There is a firmware update for the 8100 that is available at Verizon stores.
