Outrage from users who have been asking to get phones without cameras!! I figure at lease 1 cubic inch of my phone space is wasted by a camera I don't use. Yes I can get my same phone for the same money without the space - what I want is my pda phone made SMALLER because it doesn't have the camera. Instead my pda phone has a vault of unuseable space!!! If I'm forced to get some stupid gadget I should be given a choice - laser pointer, bottle opener, taser, secret decoder ring - hell something I might actually use and wouldn't be confiscated by court houses, federal facilities, high tech manufacturers, gyms, movie priviews, certain night clubs...

boe

Comments on Edinburgh Film Festival bans cellphones -- to stop piracy

Looks like we have a bunch of cheap-ass pirates here, based on the indignant response to the festival trying to protect the property of the movies. However, I'd likely have a need for it before and after the show. Those of us who live in big cities don't necessarily have a car handy to stash our phones in, and often hang out with friends before and after movies. (Such hanging out being coordinated via cellphone.)

If the theater allows customers to check their phones and pick them up after the show, then it's not as big of a deal. This is a subtle form of racism that instead of using race as a way to determine guilt, it uses whether or not you have one of the most common devices in society today.

ThePete

Comments on Edinburgh Film Festival bans cellphones -- to stop piracy

30 - I'm not yelling at people who like camera phones. I have no issue with people who want them. I have an issue with phone manufacturers only making a model with and without the camera the same dimensions because the carriers want to sell camera phones in the hope that someday someone will actually transmit a picture and they will make money. If they legitimately made identical models with and without the camera but made the same unit without the camera smaller proportional due to the removed camera (and cheaper don't pretend it is free) - I think there would be a HELL of a lot more non-camera phones out there.

boe

Comments on Edinburgh Film Festival bans cellphones -- to stop piracy

31 - Are you a member of the ACLU by any chance? I think you'd be singing a different tune if Sprint, T-Mobile, etc thought they could make money by including a fax machine on your cell phone so you were stuck with a limited choice of non fax phones and all the rest were bigger, heavier, and more expensive because a portion of the community wants them but carriers force you to get them so that they can potentially make more money.

boe

Comments on Edinburgh Film Festival bans cellphones -- to stop piracy

I can't believe how many people here are upset about telling you you can't bring camera phones into the movie. You should have it turned off during the movie so leaving it at the door shouldn't be an issue. As for those who think it is only a couple of people messing it up for everyone then we should be allowed to carry guns onto planes because only some people who own guns are bad.

boe

Comments on Edinburgh Film Festival bans cellphones -- to stop piracy

To everyone that thinks this is reasonable:

Banning any wireless communications device from any public location or event for any reason isn't only unnecessary, its rude.

There is a reason that most of us pay a good chunk of change for those phones, the ability to be reachable whenever we want, regardless of how important it is to other people.

I can think of several occasions where I've used my phone at a theater while trying to meet up with a group of people, coming from different locations (& getting to the movie @ various times). Or, in the less pleasant event of some sort of family emergency.

I'll admit I have been known to be "that guy" who forgot to put my phone on vibrate. I can't say that I've never answered a voice call, but *MOST* of the time, if I'm using my phone at a theater (or whatever) its for 2 way text messages.

I'll gladly deal with the occasional accidental ring, and even that obstinate asshole who refuses to quiet his phone, for the ability to keep in touch with my friends & family.

The guy in the back row whose phone won't stop ringing, isn't as annoying as people who think cell phones should be banned from everywhere.

This lame ass excuse for a stupid rule is nothing more than a joke. The 1.3 megapixel camera on my fone has such a crappy camcorder function that its laughable. Seriously, what kind of experiance is watching 15 second clips at 176x144 res anyway?

The thought/notion/option of owning a second, non-camera phone is also ridiculous.

Like I can afford 2 phones...

You want to watch a movie completely uniterrupted and alone in an environment you can control, rent it when it comes out on DVD.

. o O (Everyone could use a lil common f*ing courtesy these days.)

BM5k
