A decent idea, but a PDA with sound alerts can go beyond that by offering more than one alarm per day (some people change shifts and thus sleeping more than once a "day" can be a necessity).

My Sony-Ericsson Z500A does that as well. My wife's old, old Samsung phone does it too and in fact we use this phone as our alarm clock now (it no longer functions as a phone but makes a perfectly good two-person alarm clock).

Phones? PDAs? You people must be ultralight sleepers. I practically need a truck to run over me to even rouse me in the mornings. If they combined this alarm clock with the Sonic Boom alarm clock (113db alarm), I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Oh, and make that display color with a backlight for christs sake, this is 2005. That cheapo LCD looks like something straight out of 1983.

I've got one of these and it works just great for me. There is a backlight and, in fact, it's dual-illumination. The default illumination lights the display but doesn't shine in my eyes. To its purpose, it didn't appear well in this photo. When you fiddle with any of the controls the display brightens up for about 15 seconds. Oh and the nap timer is worth the purchase in of itself!

I have one of these. It works as advertised and the "user interface" is a model of clarity.

"Wolfman~K": the dial at the top is used for setting the alarm time for each day. You select the day of the week with the silver nob and then use the black nob to set the time. Once you've set the time for each day of the week, you turn the silver nob to "Run".

I thought of a device like this several years ago. It would have a touch-screen interface with a PalmOS-like app to control the alarms. There's no way it could've been sold this cheaply, though.

I have an alarm clock that does the same exact thing from wal-mart for $9.99. You can set the alarm for each time of day. Plus it has a really large blue display with differnet dim settings.

My girlfriend's $40 alarm clock has a touch screen. No multiple day settings (which would be a god-send for our schedule) but I don't think adding a touch screen would make it cost prohibitive...

Geeze I picked up something like this for my A/C unit form Home Depot - years ago. No alarm - but when programed the A/C or heater to warm up the house when its time to wake up - I awaken naturally rather than some loud piss-me-off first thing in the morning clock.

Hmmm. Wonder if this thing switches daylight saving time on and off automagically? After all, that's one of the biggest reasons people are late (or early) once a year. Now...if it does...can it be inexpensively corrected for redefinition of DST turnon/turnoff dates?

How about using Winamp and the WinampSwitch Plug-in? It's free, lets you set a separate alarm for each day, and plays a song from your favourite playlist at the volume you want.
Well, you'd have to keep your computer in the bedroom, or atleast a speaker or two, but it is possible and very comfortable...

Surprised so many of you sleep with a Cell-phone nearby - the E.M. emissions are not good for you for extended periods of time - especially at close quarters.

Recent studies suugest a link between high-exposure to cell-phone radiation and serious problems with recipient's eyes and ears.

On balance, I think any other form of alarm is preferable to a cellphone.

i want USB.

i want to download/create/customize my alarms.

and you should be able to set as many alarms as you need. there should be no limits. why should there be any?

also, and i know this will pain all of us, i'm afraid we may have to finally do away with the "dial".

get the scientists working on the tube technology immediately
