Starships zooming overhead were unreal! Sneaking up on mofo's in Splinter cell on xbox rocked too. What didn't rock was trying to watch ESPN HD or any other programming during the daytime. The picture quality and size blew away my friends 65 Toshiba rear proj. HDTV, but again I had no viewing until after sundown. Total bummer.... so I had to return it. My advice is don't buy a projector unless you have a smaller HD monitor to watch in the daytime, or if you have a room you can block ALL light out of....or unless you live in a cave;)

Big Ice D

Comments on Dell launches high-end 5100MP projector

Actually once you get up to about 2000 lumens, the picture is quite easily viewable in the daytime. Since this baby can get up to 3300 lumens, it should have no problem in terms of viewing. If you don't want stuff to block the picture then mount it on the ciling.

Also, I've played Halo2 on my ceiling-mounted Infocus Screenplay 4805 (projecting at 96" widescreen) and it's absolutely amazing. Thirty-three hundred lumens is gonna be just fine for playing in a moderately ambient-lit room, amazing in a dark one with a 2500:1 contrast ratio. I'm not a big fan of Dell, but I'll give credit where it's due... so long as this doesn't fall tragically short of expectations. We'll see...

Adam

Comments on Dell launches high-end 5100MP projector

Its not good for HT - only 2x color wheel. DLP is the way to go with projectors, it's just stunning. As for not being able to watch in the day... um, you definitely can. Draw the shades down so it's a little dark and it'll be fine. Then at night it'll be stunning. Much bigger than any other TV you'll be able to get, and much more impressive. "Oh, you have a plasma... I have a projector." Everyone is impressed by projectors... you see plasmas everywhere (they have one at the deli near me).

Adam

Comments on Dell launches high-end 5100MP projector

Lamp life and lamp costs are the deal killer for me.

The Mitsubishi projector with something like a 30000 hour LED based lamp (instead of the usual 3000) seems like a great direction (except that i currently isn't all that bright.

Hope they develop that tech some more.

3000 hours before you have to plonk down another $200-$400 just doesn't cut it for me.

DirtHerder

Comments on Dell launches high-end 5100MP projector

Re: #7 and the 1080p comment... I think that if you could put an anamorphic lens on this puppy and get a good scaler like the DVDO iScan VP30 that could scale the picture properly for 16:9 at the native resolution, you'd have a pretty decent picutre for the price point... A 4x wheel would be nice though; what a shame.

John Laur

Comments on Dell launches high-end 5100MP projector

Whoever claimed that anything over is 2000 lumens is fine for ambient light is very incorrect, and has obviously never PURCHASED a projector and is just going by what they have read. I stated in a previous post my Optoma EP759 put out @ 3500 lumens. The picture was awesome, but could only be viewed in the dark.ANY light caused the picture to be washed out,you could see it but the quality of picture sucked. Lucky for me I returned it within my 30 day period. Don't be fooled people, a projector is definately not the answer to your HDTV dreams.Don't buy one unless can dedicate a room, or like I said have a smaller HD monitor for the daytime. If you can do that then by all means enjoy.

And no...I don't hate on Dell, this bit of wit is coming straight off an Inspiron;)

Big_Ice_D

Comments on Dell launches high-end 5100MP projector

Actually,
Depending on how high your projected resolution is, 2200 lumens is bright enough to handle a brightly lit room. Just projecting on a white wall absorbs and diffuses much of the projected light.

Quality screens and multi-layer projection wall paint may be expensive, but you can't expect daytime viewing on any projector unless you have an acceptable surface to project on.

As a VJ I can attest to the value of projecting on a real screen. I've projected on everything from rocks, sand, brick walls, painted white walls, fabric, etched glass, plastics, smoke, water vapor, etc. Nothing beats projecting on a real projection screen. The Canon is only 1100 lumens and lights up the room nicely even during daylight hours. We do have a glass-beaded pull-down movie screen which helps. If this Dell 5100MP is anything close to the hype, I'll get it before long to replace my XGA CANON. I do have an animorphic lens hanging in front of my projector now, which makes an excellent picture esp. when the computer is set on full screen for animorphic movies and the lens, in turn, corrects the aspect ratio. This also concentrates the light from the projector to a smaller area thus brightneing the picture even more! You just can't beat a 119' picture, putting you right there in the action! The short bulb life still lasts about 2 years. What does the average person spend on Cable TV or cigarettes during that time? We spend nothing. For anybody still complaining about a poor picture during daylight hours, maybe you shouldn't watch so much TV anyway!!! :}
I havn't read many reviews on the 5100MP.
Hope to find some here!

Ray Morris
