I would have done it myself, but I was too busy writing up a big long entry in my blog saying the same thing. People complain about things TiVo does too much. Stop it. There was a big deal going on about the Fast Forward commercial tags a few months back. Has anyone heard anyone else complain about that since? No, and that's because TiVo finds a way to fix the problems they encounter with little to no effect on the consumer. They'll fix this, and you may not be able to record a Pay-Per-View program on your TiVo. So what, you can't watch it if you record it to VCR either, so what's new about this?

#17, you're also right. The copy protection has been in place for the DVD burner/TiVo's for a long time now. You can't transfer a program from one TiVo to a TiVo burner and then burn it. It won't let you.

This is a long time coming, but no one cared to complain about it before because it's a standard Macrovision encoding. But now that there is a real world glitch with it, everyone comes out of the woodwork to complain about it.

Mo

Comments on TiVo 7.2 OS adds red flag content protection "feature"

I'm with #3 and #11 - really glad I went for the ReplayTV over TiVo.

Jonathan

Comments on TiVo 7.2 OS adds red flag content protection "feature"

#6 oh no, you had to DOWNLOAD your guide, and READ too wah wah.

Seriously, you are acting like a jerk.

Alcaron

Comments on TiVo 7.2 OS adds red flag content protection "feature"

ReplayTV users shouldn't be so smug - ReplayTV agreed to the MacroVision license a year BEFORE TiVo! And the same capabilities are supposedly already IN the ReplayTV software, and were before TiVo added them (which was back in 5.x at least, NOT in 7.2 and people keep saying). You know why you haven't seen it? The same reason nearly all TiVo users haven't seen it - because NO ONE IS USING IT! The only times this has shown up, it has been a glitch in the broadcast. Since there are several times the number of TiVos as ReplayTV units, it is more likely to be noticed by a TiVo user.

This is part of the MacroVision license, and the same flags are honored by cable company DVRs, and yes, you can be fairly certain any new DirecTV DVR will honor them as well. Just about ever VCR, DVR, DVD Recorder, etc, you can find has a MacroVision license. (You MUST have one for DVD.) And the license requires the product to honor the various control flags. And yes, it probably will show up in MCE if it isn't already, MS has pledged to improve their DRM and copy protection.

So if you want to avoid it completely, you should build a MythTV or FreeVo box.

MegaZone

Comments on TiVo 7.2 OS adds red flag content protection "feature"

"The feature being there is a non-issue since no networks utilize it."

That's like saying the nuclear arms race is a non-issue because there aren't currently any nukes whistling through the air over our heads.

genevieve

Comments on TiVo 7.2 OS adds red flag content protection "feature"

#22... actually it's ILLEGAL for the broadcasts of OTA networks (like the one that was 'flagged' in this example) to use it.

So there really is no danger other than a one in a million bug hitting your TiVo.

I record dozens and dozens of shows on a TiVo AND a ReplayTV every week on many, many channels and I've never seen this.

chris

Comments on TiVo 7.2 OS adds red flag content protection "feature"

well, somebody sure went to a hell of a lot of engineering work to implement this "illegal" feature, then. seems odd, dunnit?

stan g
