Perhaps if you count the analog (which this phone doesn't appear to support). If you look at their digital network, you're barely better than T-Mobile's coverage map. I agree that some carriers work in some places better than others, but Verizon is beginning to feel the pain of being on a non-standard network technology. They've been releasing fewer analog phones and more phones with GSM support for international use. Simply put, GSM has economies of scale and Verizon will have to switch at some point. Here in Chicago, Cingular BLOWS and Verizon is amazing, in terms of coverage. Other places this is not the case. When T-mobile is acquired by Cingular (next 18 mos) and Sprint/Nextel and Verizon merge (next 5 years) it will be two giants facing off and we will all get screwed with pricing. My guess is CDMA will always be around in America and the CDMA carriers will offer GSM compatible headsets for the very small percentage of their customers who frequently travel abroad. America will never convert fully to GSM, at least not anytime soon b/c too much money has been spent on CDMA and at least for now it is the faster network. Just b/c the rest of the world uses GSM doesn't mean America ever will. I originally thought I could buy a Bluetooth adapter for my PC and could syncronize between the two?" - Eric M

For the GSM RAZR, where OBEX (Object Exchange - think pictures, audio, video, contact info) is enabled, yes, you can sync your phone up with your computer - albeit somewhat in-elegantly... this depends a lot on the Bluetooth drivers and software you have on your computer - to sync up stuff easily Moto sells software that works over USB or Bluetooth for the RAZR, but as I have never used it, I can't offer any info on how well it works; I just use my laptop's Bluetooth to send stuff back and forth. And while I can send all of my contacts or pictures or mp3s to my RAZR easily (and at once), it seems I can only send one contact at a time back from the phone - go figure - but I can retrieve all of the other files at once from my computer... I am pretty sure its a ploy by Moto to sell their software, but I digress...

On the Verizon's RAZR, OBEX is disabled (this was Verizon's choice, not Moto's), and you are forced to use Verizon's network to send yourself any pictures you take, to get ringtones, get backgrounds, etc - all while Verizon gets to charge you for each (aren't they sweet). The only aspect of Bluetooth that they left enabled is support for wireless headsets and handsfree (like for use in certain cars, for ex.). I prefer to hold my phone in my hand, so to me, they have essentially taken away all the Bluetooth fun for their own gain... so sure they have a nice network, but they really don't care about you as a customer

Thomas

Comments on

but they really don't care about you as a customer

They seem to be more interested in sucking customer's wallets dry. Bluetooth really does not prohibit them from making a killing from GIN- allowing me to send contacts to my PDA or laptop & back again via bluetooth doesn't block ANY GIN functionality that exists. So sure, maybe the picture messaging profits might go down, if EVERYONE I know has a BT cellphone AND I'm willing to wait until I'm within 10 feet of that person to send them the picture... for that Verizon might as well prevent you from showing someone your picture because that cuts into GIN as well.

h0mi

Comments on

Is there the possibility of hacking OBEX open?

Eric M

Comments on

#9: My 25th birthday, too. Let's clear up some of the ignorance with the light of objectivity:

1. Verizon is the highest-rated carrier by Consumer Reports.

2. Verizon has the lowest percentage of complaints of any national carrier, according to FCC reports (US Cellular has even fewer complaints, but is considered a regional carrier).

From town to town, neighborhood to neighborhood, signal quality can vary. Also, no carrier is free of jerks in the Customer Service department. So, anyone's SUBJECTIVE opinion based on PERSONAL experience may vary from the norm, but as a general rule, Verizon is tops.

BTW, I am not a Verizon stooge. I signed on with Sprint to get a specific phone. Although the carrier quality sucks, the features and quality of the phone makes it a winning choice for me. Reception is excellent with verizon were ever I go. I have friends with cingular, and in Houston,Tx, they do not get nearly the coverage I do in town or out of town. Cingular copied Verizon's price plans! the only thing they have is roll over wich doesn't start 3 months later, and expires 12 months later. It's just a gimmick, people tell me I have 1200 minutes rolled over or 2500 minutes roller over; so what if you do, that means you never used the minutes and you never will and in a couple of months they will be gone anyways. All that aside, I would wait for the RAZR to come out, add the lines and purchase the RAZR for one of them so you dont have to pay full retail for it, have them do an ESN change and give your existing phone to one of the other lines, just get insurance on one of your phones cuz the old one has no type of warranty. This will redo your 2 year contract from that date becuase you changed from a single line to a family share plan. I've worked for cingular, sprint, tmobile, and verizon. Had phones with all of them, as you can see i stuck with Verizon becuase they work the best. So what if they cripple bluetooth on the phone, THEY ARE A BUSINESS! THEY MAKE MONEY! and by the looks of it they due a good job since there network is the best. They invest alot into there network to keep it the best. Cingular is going to invest alot of money ($7 billion in 4 years) Verizon just invested 5.5 billion this year, and invested atleast 4 billion every year into its network. So when is Cingular going to out due Verizon...? due the math, Verizon will have invested atleast $16 billion in 4 years compared to Cingulars $7 billions. To break down 4 billion a year, everyday it's $10.95 million (10.958904) a day. What other company is doing that? So complain about the phones all you may, but do you people get phones to listen to music on? or take 1.3mp or 2.0mp pictures with? or do you get Verizon phones so you can due the most iportant thing, make and revieve calls from? If you guys are so worried about putting your own stuff on a Verion phone, get the MOTO e815, you can email your self pictures and ring tones (no larger then 300Kb), put stuff on the memory card, send a bogus pix message and save the pictures and your 30 second MIDI ringtones. (make a 30 sec ond .mp3 ring tone, and then change the .mp3 extension to .midi) you will get full voice and music. the E815 is the last Verizon phone that came out with the original menu, and not with Verizon's menu. It's not LG's it's Verizons. That's my 2 cents.

Ali

Comments on

for the love of god... when is the razr coming out for verizon???? i've read so many rumors online that it was coming out on 11/28, but i asked a verizon customer service rep and they told me that there is no solid date on when they expect the razr to be available. does anyone know the truth? no rumors pls!!!

my

Comments on

I am a Verizon customer of two years. In the past I have used Cingular, Nextel, Sprint and T-Mobile. I can tell you Verizon provides superior coverage, better reception and fewer dropped calls than any available provider. I will buy a Razor for one reason: the thickness. In the front pocket of dress slacks it will remain unseen, unlike other phones. I don't need the camera, ringtones, video games and all that other kiddie crap. I need a phone to make and receive calls - that's it! Some of the above posted comments remind me of the Mac vs. PC argument. A phone (or a computer) is not your personal friend, personal identity, status symbol or sense of self-worth, unless you are pathetic.
