Winners of Engadget's Halloween Costume Contest!
We had some freaking amazing entries in our first annual Halloween Costume Contest (though no one actually wanted to be really scary and dress up as Peter Rojas). But when it came down to it, we had to pick some winners; we actually wound up having more runners up than we'd originally expected because there were so many great entries, but our grand prize goes to Komei H., and his functional Canon PowerShot S200-with working rear LCD viewfinder! Be sure to check out the rest of our winners after the break!
Grand prize (5G iPod with video)
Yes, the barrel retracts!
Yes! The viewfinder is functional!
So the camera actually takes pictures, then previews them or goes viewfinder style on the back display the rig was powered by a car jumpstarter. Wow. Just wow. Way to go, Komei!
Second place (unlocked RAZR V3)
2nd place goes to Cam R., and his functional Daft Punk costume. When we say functional, we mean that helmet scrolls text, just like in the video. Damn, yo. Peep the 15MB AVI of it in action!
Runners up (Tokyo Flash watches)
Ryan Zs TiVo costume may look like the real deal, but trust is, this thing is home freakin made.
We always wondered what kind of facial expressions an anthropomorphized iSight + mount might have. Thanks, Ben J.
We too want to touch Nicholas T.s Nintendo controller.
Michael E.s nano wasnt iPod-functional, but he showed some serious TLC in its fabrication.
Honorable mention
Troy C.s functional iPod was pretty great, so were gonna givem something nice anyway.
Paul Js terminator/robot mask was freaking insane. Hes gonna get something nice, too.
Big thanks to everyone who entered! Well have more contest entrant highlights later today, so stay tuned!

would be kinda hard to drink at a party with a Canon PowerShot S200 on your head no? lol
Great stuff. That iPod nano looks pimp.
See that's what people do when they have all the time in the world.
One question about the PowerShot - one month after the warranty expires, does the barrel stop retracting, and the guy inside just start beeping insanely?
That is a HORRIBLE blending job on the Terminator cyborg bit
I'm curious as to how the S200 guy held all that gear up above his head, by my estimation, 15-20 pounds worth. He must have built some kind of rig to hold it all, or only wore the costume for like 10 minutes tops.
The Clickwheels not working, HIT IT HARDER DAMN IT!!!!
must agree... the terminator mask looks like crap... would be good if you took away the brown goo that appears to be holding it on :)
That daft punk costume would be a perfect match with the RAZR V3.
Btw, that S200 is too hardcore... wayyyy too much time in his hands.
I wonder if the fecal matter the terminator used to stick the mask to his head smells
i could swear that Troy C. is hanging with one of the Bush twins in that picture...
whats with all the people that are always saying "way too much time on their hands"....give em a break...they enjoy doing this kind of thing and its fun to see..so why do you guys come on here and say stuff as if they should be doing something else with their time???
are guess you guys are just jealous your bill gates costumes didn't get you the razr....oh wait those aren't costumes! ;)
No one posting comments here should criticize anyone else for having too much time on their hands, IMO.
That Michael E looks like he's in pain. What is he doing behind that nano?
FYI.. the terminator guy was added after I made the first post (either that or im delirious) - the engadget boys here obviously wanted some more variation in the winners. Not a bad thing..
That daft punk helmet is freaking amazing.
I would have liked to win, but these people TOTALLY deserve it. Good show!
The 'gunk' around the terminator mask is probably meant to simulate peled back flesh.
i must say it is quite an honor to beat out all the other ipods... and yes, the reason IS because lately i've had a bit too much free time... haha... think apple will hire me??? :)
If you really wanted to you could buy that terminator kit premade in many Halloween stores. Maybe spring for some better facial putty and blending makeup though.
"The 'gunk' around the terminator mask is probably meant to simulate peled back flesh."
Yea, you know what you use for that? Latex. Not hot glue.
Aw, leave the guy alone. I found it to be a very creative use of the leftover carmel from his carmel apple kit.
Dude I had the scariest, geekiest costume of them all....SPYWARE!!!
MWhahaha run for the hills its Spyware!

*Some of those signs actually blinked
Sure the terminator mask could have been bought, but where's the fun in that? Give the bloke credit for making it himself!
Wow, this was some tough competition. Glad to see I got an honorable mention. Not bad for three days and less than $40 bucks. Full details on how it was made at ipod.troyconrad.com, for the curious. (And no, that's not a Bush twin. That's Carla.)
"It's in your nature to destroy yourselves."
the terminator mask is premade, my friend wore it to my halloween party, he was given it years ago. The putty is wax, the eye piece glows and is powered by a battery, and it gets really hot and burns your eye.
sorry, but all he's done is stick an intel sticker onto it!!!
Thanks for all the feedback on the terminator mask guys, its very welcome. I agree that the gunk is a little rouge. This image was pre make-up which blended it a little better but its fat from ideal. The gunk is actually Copydex paper glue which I placed on the mask while it was still on the plaster case of my face Id made. It dries into a rubber which is soft but holds its shape. I couldnt source latex at short notice here in Ireland and I needed to work with the bit and piece I had at hand.
The mark is not pre-made as some have suggested. I cased my face in alginate and plaster and used that as a model to make the mask using air drying clay. I used sliver tap, normally used to cover plaster boards, to cover it and then painted over it. Various pieces (rawplugs, old electronic parts solder wire, etc) where used to act and hydraulics and other bits and bobs. It was originally kitted out with 6 lights but at they where very small and delicate LCDs and most failed.
This is only one image of the complete build I sent to Engadget so they know the work involved. There was also a chest burn and damaged knee to complete the look. Its not perfect as some have correctly pointed out but I had fun experimenting.
He should disguise the rest of the body as a tripod!
well i give you a 5 for effort. i dont have the focus to do stuff like this anyways. basicly i give up, leaving behind a whole lot of halfdone projects...
"No one posting comments here should criticize anyone else for having too much time on their hands, IMO."
Thanks for pointing that out Dominic. I'm sure these people would agree that my 5 minute break to get a gadget review session/mental relief from work spent on Engadget while my coworkers are on their smoke break qualifies as having too much time on my hands.
Yes that is me, Carla, not a bush twin although considering how bad i look in that picture i consider being called a bush twin a compliment. Lord knows, I was drunk and don't even remember having any pictures taken.
O man that daft punk costume it too much i love it tho gj man. tho the camera had me rolling on the floor laughing. gj to you all.
I think the terminator looks great! Shame some are being so negative about it.
Don't suppose anyone could pass on his email address to me? I could really use his advice on some moulds I'm thinking of making.
I'd give my right arm to know where you can find that Daft Punk helmet. What a great costume!
Dude, that Daft Punk was freaking cool. Really think it should've been #1. Well maybe if you were dancing to "Harder Better Faster Stronger" in the video, then that would've happened. Killer costume.
I was Master Chief this halloween. spent a year making my suit! So worth it.
