Revolution has USB ports. What's to keep it from being compatible with USB Mass Storage devices? Well, either way, 512MB should be more than enough for emulating games. For game saves and basic programs, not to mention retro game downloads, 512 is plenty, and lowers the cost for everybody. Besides, as well as the mentioned SD card slots, the Revolution carries 2 USB 2.0 ports, so if they decided to support it, all manor of standard external drives and devices could be used, unlike Microsoft's "read only" stance for 360.

But wait, there's more;
If they decide to support it, you could always stream whatever data you want across a home network; something MS only lets you do if you own a Media Centre PC (which no-one does), and unlike MS, Nintendo includes WIFI, and doesn't charge you $100 extra for the privaledge.

As for non-innovative: Do you understand what's going on here?

Nintendo may actually be showing us a usable, Sofa-friendly 3D interface device. Why the F*** has it taken so long for MS to pioneer an equivalent system for the PC? We've had the F***ing retro 2-dimensional mouse and operating system for 20 YEARS NOW, and it ISN'T sofa friendly. Why dont they have a small onboard hard drive (e.g. 5GB) so things like flying over cities will be at least semi-cachable. But saying that the ps2 just about manages to stream san andreas on what is the worst spec console available.

512MB is a good idea, especially as flash memory that small is currently very cheap and reliable for mass production. The USB ports had to show up on one of the next gen consoles considering practically every body owns a USB compatible flash drive, mp3 player or camera. Read only is bollocks, who wants to use a pc to manage things when you could just as easily do it from the sofa.

As far as specifications on the next-gen consoles go, i'd rather see some innovation rather than better graphic repition. There's nothing that annoys me more than FIFA X. I'm an owner of an xbox (well I was before I sold it on ebay to buy a PSP), and I loved that console. Shame the controller was just a better version of the PS2 controller which was ripped straight from the Nintendo 64. I love it that Nintendo take risks, more than usually pull them off. Why doesn't Sony and especially MS take a look into this? Three cores is impressive, but someone can make double, triple quadruple that. What about the amazing controller, small simple design, out of the box wifi.

Whatever, i'm impressed by everyone, but i'm undecided who's best. ATM it's Nintendo.

PS. How about that little thing called the Gameboy that launched the portable console game market?

Sure not all things Nintendo touches turns to gold. Things like ROB and the Virtual Boy failed but they were also attempts at innovation. The Power Glove doesn't count as it was made by Mattel. That's the price of trying to innovate, there will be failures. You just hope the successes outweigh the failures.

Tell me of an action RPG that was as innovative and fun as the original Zelda at that time. Tell me of a side scroller that was as refined and fun as Super Mario Bros. at that time. Tell me of an adventure game as fun and innovative as the original Metroid at that time. How about Super Mario 64, arguably one of the best games ever and the first to show how to do a proper 3D action platformer. Mario Kart created a whole new sub genre for racing games. How about the party game genre created by Nintendo with Mario Party? The Gamecube was faster nd had a better graphics engine than the PS2 but the PS2 was the successful one. The PSPs more powerful than the DS but certainly in Japan, nd to a certain extent elsewhere the DS is the successful one. The fact is that power doesnt guarantee sales. Nintendos new console is going to be the most unique, and is going to porbably going to be the cheapest, so I think it will do quite well.

Johndude

Comments on With the Nintendo Revolution launch "Anything's possible"

Nintendo should seriously patent all the stuff they do because even though Sony says they don't consider Nintendo copetition, they sure have a long history of stealing stuff from them. Anyways I'm glad they're attempting to try something new and I'll definitly buy it because it'll be cheap and just because I like Nintendo. Also PSP emulation isn't really going to work if you want to play roms and any of the newer PSP games since you need the new firmware to play them. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

T1K1 F1SH

Comments on With the Nintendo Revolution launch "Anything's possible"

Nintendo have forever been patenting the technologies and ideas they develop. It's just other companies work their way around them. In the case of a certain version of rumble technology, both SONY and MS flat out infringed them (though Nintendo didn't hold that particular patent). I think this time, Nintendo's solution incorperates so many distinct technologies to make it work, and it's so massively differentiated that it's nigh on impossible this time for the competition to do the same thing.

At a time where backwards compatibility for Sony's contollers is really important to them (PS3 doesn't support PS2 or PS1 controllers) and MS's controller is set in stone, it's all the more important - hence why Nintendo waited to show theirs until it was too late for MS to redesign.

As for PSP emulation, you can almost take bets on when the newest firmware will be cracked wide open: it's virtually the law. In fact I think the UN is ratifying the legislation as we speak.

elmer

Comments on With the Nintendo Revolution launch "Anything's possible"

*I think* that consoles have come to a point where graphics don't really matter anymore, I mean seriously, current gen consoles pretty much offers a pretty good realism, so I have no problem with the Revo being 3 times more powerful than the GC. That being said, the PS3 is most likely going to be at a ridiculously high price................. for better graphics, most people won't even realise the difference IMO. Not sure about Xbox 360 though.

anonymous

Comments on With the Nintendo Revolution launch "Anything's possible"

I was right! I was right!... Well, partially anyway.

It seems the Xbox 360 will stream PICTURES AND MUSIC from any PC, but will only let you play VIDEO (WMV at that) off of a Media Centre PC (www.kotaku.com). I don't see there being any techinical or logistical limitation that would prevent this, which leaves only one possibility: they don't want you to do it. Not without paying more anyway.

I know no-one's gonna read this.
