Photon, the next version of Windows Mobile
Alright, so Ryan and I are kicking it here in Seattle at Mobius, Microsoft's invite-only conference about Windows Mobile and mobile devices (don't worry, we paid our own way, we don't accept junkets). Not a ton of news or product announcements, but we did just get a sneak peek at Photon, the codename for the next version of Windows Mobile. We can't say too much about it — we didn't sign an NDA, but the meeting was officially off-the-record — but what we saw was hot, it's without a doubt a big (and much overdue) leap forward for the platform. The new OS is still "years" away, but the one thing they would confirm is that they're finally going to unify the Smartphone and Pocket PC platforms, something they were supposedly going to do with Windows Mobile 5.0.

Micro$oft should be spending their time fixing up any bugs WM5 instead of jumping to a new OS. Typical M$ -.-'

No wonder the current version is so bug-riddled, the developers have abandon it for Photon.

Years?!?
OK, Symbian/Palm/Linux here I come...

Wonder if they'll remove half of it's actually innovative features before it ships, like Vista.

d3, that is ridiculous, it takes years to develop an operating system, you don't think Apple is already thinking about what comes after OS X?

Developers don't have Photon to abandon Windows Mobile 5.0 for yet. This is a very preliminary version of the new version of Windows Mobile, and probably has mostly User Interface diferences.

I thought that already HAD unified the two? I've been trying one of each (SPV C600 and Orange M5000) and was quite suprised by how klunky and unstable they were... I really hoped Microsoft would have got it right this time. I'm not just trolling, I really did think from the scale of the announcement a while ago that they'd put some serious effort into it this time round....

This just in... Microsoft makes big promises about future releases of their software and how it will unify everything.
