Okay, nice, but most of my paper books are black and white and a color screen makes a big hit on the battery.

As far as I know E-ink is only black and white at the moment. PDF capability is a possibility but it has some drawbacks. I'd rather have a conversion tool that converts PDF to an open e-book format. For years I have been waiting for the day when they would release a high-res e-ink type display for desktop use. Forget color, high refresh rates, etc. I just want something as easy to read as paper. It doesn't have to the only display on my desktop. I hope somebody finally figures that out and brings a product to market.

Jason

Comments on Philips spinoff iRex plans ebook reader

"cheap, easy to use, have color displays, and have a common platform for software and DRM"

NO DRM. I will only accept an open platform that will accept anything I currently have in non-DRMed .txt, .doc, .pdf, .rtf, etc.

What they SHOULD be doing is embedding something like damn small linux and letting the community add formats.

The Apple vs. The World DRM fiasco currently going on tells me that I will never accept less than absolutely NO DRM whatsoever (DRM=company lock-in, nothing more nothing less. Palm Reader and Plucker. Between the two I can read all most anything I would read in print. I get most of my books from Fictionwise followed by the Baen Free Library and, Project Gutenburg. And no I don't feel bad about using the Baen Free Library, I've bought a few books as a result of starting a good series there just as Mr Baen had hoped. DRM bad. Buying books out of a continued interest in supporting some of the only sane people in the copyright industry good.

Gadget

Comments on Philips spinoff iRex plans ebook reader

A color display defeats the purpose of this breed of e-book. The point is to replicate the look of paper, not to diaplay colors and aliased text. That kind iof thing is what prevents people from reading e-book readers for long periods of time. If they can replicate the look of ink on paper, with it;s higher contrast and sharp edges, then eye strain and fatigue are significantly lessened.

Color will NOT make this useful. 4 colors in grayscale will.

JimK

Comments on Philips spinoff iRex plans ebook reader

As a student I have needed to read PDF files without staring at the computer screen all day. This would be a useful tool and I'd pay for it. I don't know why it's so dang hard to get an E-book reader fabricated. Just give a palm a bigger screen.
