I would love to get one of these if I didn't play games. It's already hard enough on you wallet to buy a good enough graphics card to output 1920x1200 with good graphical settings turned on, but with this behemoth, you are pretty much going to have to have a dual graphics card setup and goods ones at that. I would say if you are a gamer, take dell's price and add about $1000 to it (more if u dont have a mobo that can do dual cards) and thats what it is going to take to run this thing. It's native resolution is only 1366x768 which can be driven 1:1 from a 7800GT/X or the ATI 1800 series. I was very excited about the apple display a while back but there are several reasons I changed my mind and went "lower def".

Reason 1: Resolution: Yes, 2560x1600 is WAY too many pixels. Don't get me wrong, for regular desktop use, this is fantastic but consider gaming in 1 to 1 for a moment. Have you ever seen how bad your 17 inch looks when you kick back the resolution from 1280x1024 to 1024x768? You get pixel doubling and all sorts of scaling and it looks awful. In addition, it sacrifices both your DVI connections which keeps you from going dualhead.

Reason #2 Speed: Yes, speed, your machine is not fast enough to render games or movies with any kind of scaling worth mentioning. If you want to scale to the native resolution of the screen, I hope you have a much more serious rig than I do because a Athlon 64, 4000 wiht a 7800 GTX 512 is NOT going to cut it :)

Reason #3 Connectivity and HDTV: If you want to use this thing to do anything other than be a monitor, you may want to consider that it's fairly unlikely it will have connections like Component Video or Standard DVI. This means that if you don't have a bleeding edge dish tuner, you will be connecting using 15 pin analog.

Conclusion: There is nothing wrong with this TV but consider the resolutions you game in and the native resolution of HDTV content. Running 1:1 to source material always looks better than anything else. When I play NFS most wanted in 1024x768, I get 1:1 mapping with black bars on the left and right. Games that DO support widescreen always offer 1280x768 and can usually be configured to run in 1366x768 with a little messing around. You won't be able to drive this display for anything other than desktop/professional use in its native glory for at least another year with current GPU technology.

Cheers,

Josh.

Josh Cartu

Comments on The Dell 3007WFP to drop Jan 5th

this thing's gonna need a good graphic process to back that 20" screen up

hafa

Comments on The Dell 3007WFP to drop Jan 5th

I love it! I underestimated the toll that the high res of the 2405 panel would take on my video card. FEAR is pretty much unplayable at native resolution on a 6800GT. (Which, granted, is a last generation video card playing a current generation game.) In any case, going from driving 2.3MP to 4.0MP of goodness is going to take almost double the processing power to render. (Just a back of the envelope guess, 74% more pixels should be at least 74% more work since it should be rendering at the increased resolution, not just upscaling a signal)

Anyways, I wonder if one of those 7800GTX 512s could pull it off solo pretty well, or maybe it'd take like 2 7800 GT/GTX 256s to perform well?

Perhaps you're thinking that'd be overkill but according to http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/09/seven_of_nvidia/page38.html at Toms Hardware, 2 7800GTX 256s running in SLI only drive FEAR (on ultra quality) to 59fps at a resolution of 1280x960.
