I have had both and recommend both. I live in one of the top 5 media markets and the quality of the terrestrial radio here is criminal. The music on both services are great and comparable (for what I listen to). The deciding factor is content and sometimes equipment. O&A or Howard, NFL or MLB, the list goes on. XM's Traffic is much better than Sirius, though. The true debate is not XM vs. Sirius but Satellite vs. Terrestrial. Video content can be either streamed live or stored for later playback.

In addition to in-car video, the XM Advanced Services vehicle will have the cutting-edge Voice Command system developed with VoiceBox® Technologies. The VoiceBox platform goes beyond typical voice recognition technologies and lets the driver use conversational speech to control the XM radio. For instance, the driver can ask to hear a certain kind of music, such as jazz, and VoiceBox will ask which of XM's five jazz channels the driver would like to hear. The driver can reply and the XM radio changes channels automatically - without the driver's hands ever leaving the steering wheel. Delivering an exceptional user experience, the technology is part of a new multi-year partnership between XM and VoiceBox to deliver a voice-enabled XM Radio platform to automakers and the aftermarket.

The XM Advanced Services vehicle also offers a demonstration of XM WeatherLink, a new concept that delivers advanced warning of weather-related driving conditions in real time. Developed with XM's partner WxWorx, a division of Baron Services, using the same technology behind the acclaimed XM WX Satellite Weather service for marine and aviation, XM WeatherLink alerts drivers to weather conditions on the road ahead.

Another innovation found inside the XM Advanced Services vehicle will help drivers locate parking spaces. XM, in conjunction with partners Nu-Metrics, Inc. (A Quixote Company) and InfoGation, will demonstrate its "ParkingLink" capability concept, which works with the car's navigation system to find available parking spots. The system shows the actual number of spaces available at designated parking facilities on the vehicle navigation map, and uses color-keyed icons to indicate the percentage availability of each facility.

XM's "ParkingLink" concept builds upon the success of the XM NavTraffic service, which displays real-time traffic information on vehicle navigation maps. XM NavTraffic informs the driver how fast traffic is moving on major highways in major metro markets, and pinpoints the locations of current traffic jams, accident sites, and road closures. Introduced in 2004, XM NavTraffic, powered by NAVTEQ Traffic, is a standard feature of the Acura RL and an option in the Cadillac CTS. Plus, Pioneer and Garmin offer aftermarket navigation systems with XM NavTraffic capability.

The XM Advanced Services vehicle contains all of these technologies, plus streaming data displays of stock quotes and sports scores, and of course, XM Satellite Radio.

Brad Johnson

Comments on Live coverage of the XM press event: Highlight reel, but Snoop ain't in da house

Ok, as a big Sirius fan let me first point out the advantages of XM. The traffic channels are not shared by 2 cities. Each city has its own channel. XM has a movie soundtrack channel. XM has MLB and NASCAR. Outside of these i see little noticeable advantage of XM.

NOW to Sirius. Sirius, and call this nitpicking if u will, has channel names that actually make sense (Fred, Ethel, Squizz, Boneyard, The Fish, Highway 16?). Sirius sports LARGELY outshines XM's. Some people cant always be at home during all their sporting events. For fans of the NFL like myself, hearing about 12 hours of ACTUAL LIVE NFL talk 365-24-7 is VERY entertaining. Sirius has also opened up an NBA channel as well. Hearing live broadcasts of NBA, NFL and (for another year) NHL are great for a sports lover like myself who works weekends often and cant have my nose in a TV. Of course, leave it to small minded people to think that nobody ever works on a weekend. But anyway back to Sirius, anyone can say what they think about Howard Stern's comedy, but you cant deny his impact and his very tangible honesty and forthcomingness. THAT is what KEEPS his fans. The humor helps drive the show along.

Now about an earlier comment regarding the Sirius receivers being large and the tech being inferior, i STRONGLY disagree there. Stern is what made me start looking at satelitte radio. But i knew in the beginning that i wasnt just going to get Sirius because of him. I am a fan, but not THAT big a fan. He was merely my introduction to satelitte, from which point i would decide which way to go. When i went to the store and looked at the receivers, i found the XM units to have cheesy looking, VERY cluttered screens. The menus are difficult to work with and as has been stated in countless consumer report studies, Sirius signal sounded better for music (these same studies lean toward XM as far as talk radio sound). The Sirius units on the other hand were very easy to read. The menus were easy to work with. Then when i got to sampling channels, i could turn to a Sirius channel, see the name and actually have some idea what i would be listening to. It seems to me, that in some odd way, XM is almost TRYING to put off new customers with user-unfriendly receivers. Also, call me crazy if you want, but those Roady receivers look AWFUL. Those display screens look hideous. I cant even look at tone of those things without my eyes hurting. Its no wonder their store price has plummeted. Who would want one ?

Nowadays when i go to stores and see people shopping for receivers, i NEVER see anyone ask about XM. I have seen a couple diehard XM fan salespeople try their darnedest to pitch XM, but i see the looks on peoples faces when they look at XM receievers and try to work with them (as i mentioned above), and they simply don't like it. It's my belief that all of the above mentioned reasons are why. It certainly isn't for lack of advertising. God only knows i see that Snoop Doggs missing chain commercial 10 times a day. XM also recently bought commercial spots on VH-1 during a showing of Private Parts. Now THAT (which Stern also pointed out) looks VERY desperate.

Sirius is the satelitte company that wants to welcome you in. XM just doesnt seem to care (which Stern ALSO pointed out was the 2 different attitudes he received when negotiating with the 2 companies executives). It shows in the product and it shows in the programming. As has been stated before and i agree with, if there was no Sirius i WOULD have XM, but given all the factors i have layed out, give me Sirius anyday.
