I've had a much-beloved, much-defended, much-touted, much-worshipped PALM OS TREO for about a year, now. I've got some news.

* The 650 doesn't DO one handed navigation for everything. I find myself having to pry open my Innopocket aluminum case to get at the buttons with regularity due to a lackluster email, contact and seek/find system.

* PalmOS 5.x is DATED, OLD, SLOW, LAGGY and UNSTABLE. It requires no small $$$ investment in applets and hacks that correct mistakes and missing essentials. It requires programs to make up for the networking, ringtone, stability and many other functionality aspects that WM5 has.

* Check any Treo forums - witness the pain and suffering of the average user. Instability, slow/lagged/crashprone phone performance, battery life, reception, lack of memory, people begging for patches that fix or improve this or that problem, hoping against hope for an OS upgrade that's never coming (maybe palmSource/Access will be so kind as to kick down a new OS to Palm someday).

Oh yeah, nothing can touch the glorious, wonderous PALM OS, right, Mossberg? I quite doubt the phone/email is 'weaker' on Windows - it certainly hasn't been true of the many PPC/WinCE and Palm/CLIE/Handspring devices I've owned.

Sign THIS long-time PDA user up for the WindowsMobile edition, thanks very much. I had a 650 for a while and found it to be an unappealing device to use out of the box when compared to a couple other PDA phones I've used. The interface is clunky and the apps seem half assed. Having to add a mishmash of third party apps just to give it close to the same capabilities that something like the Mot A780 has out of the box was really disappointing. One hand use on the palm treo was vastly easier than wm2003. On MS's OS you've got to get the stylus out for EVERYTHING. Editing/adding a contact, an appointment, just about any form anywhere. Treo's palm version was an absolute pleasure in that respect, (and the only product I've seen like it.) I'm not at all surprised that the Treo is limited in that respect with microsoft.

Pete

Pete_L_P

Comments on Palm Treo 700W review roundup: Mossberg says it "doesn't beat 650"

David Pogue is of a similar opinion...

http://tech.nytimes.com/pages/technology/circuits/

KG

Comments on Palm Treo 700W review roundup: Mossberg says it "doesn't beat 650"

Great, I need some reviews and feedback I'm going with either the treo 700w or teh sprint's ppc-6700 so far i'm leaning towards the ppc-6700

wayne

Comments on Palm Treo 700W review roundup: Mossberg says it "doesn't beat 650"

Good, because I wasn't planning on replacing my 650 with the 700. Palm has taken a few liberties with WinMob5 and they are nice enhancements but are NOT the same as the 650 features. As for one handed use... it IS there and it works well, it just took me an hour or so to get the hang of it and of course I learned a few things once I founf the Quick Tour in Programs. After a few hours now I can honestly say I like it... it has a few quirks (like the option + phone button functionality on the 650 is OPTION then press PHONE where on the 700 it is both pressed together. The kind of expensive phones that only worker bees are allowed to carry because their work environment is composed of proprietary Outlook / Exchange.

>>--> How is that different from a Treo 650 being just another palm based phone? But I think the 700 IS different, Palm did an excellent job of integrating the keyboard just as they did in the 650... now as for email, I already have my 700 checking gmail and my work Lotus Notes email, hardly tied to Exchange outlook... although with Exchange you apparently CAN do push email, but that is about the same as the Blackberry which is tied to their software add-ons atop Lotus/MS servers. Chatter is the only push email I've ever seen that was truly open and I was a big user when I had a 650. Apparently the push feature in the 700/Exchange model is hidden SMS derived in some way... I hope someone figures out how to tap into that.

---Regular users, on the other hand, will continue preferring the simplicity of PalmOS and the thousands of inexpensive third party applications available.

>>--> Can't say that WinMob really lags in this department anymore...

---H*ck, I can buy a PalmOS Garnet powered smartphone with mp3 playback, megapixel level camera for around $300 greenbacks, and the Treo 700w costs more than double of that amount.

>>--> I think that price will change once Verizon's exclusive rights end... the 650 cost a fortune on sprint before anyone else was allowed to carry it. I paid $550 for my 650 when it was just released, not too out of line with the 700, anyone who'd spend 550 on a phone won;t balk at 619! Oh, maybe it's (still) total lack of multitasking, file management, proper memory management, networking and peripheral PnP. Why are Palm's handhelds so freakin expensive? Im 21 and I owned two cell phones in my entire life, Handspring Visor Phone and Handspring Treo 270. Both phones I had bought from ebay so they basically was someone's hand me down item, but I paid under $100 for both. Just yesterday my Treo 270 broke when it slipped out of my inner pocket and landed on hard titled floor. Now I am shopping for a new phone, and I kinda got use to the Palm based phones, I check Palm's website and they've priced there non contract phones unbelievably high, the Treo 650 goes for $599 uncontracted. I have T-Mobile and they don't carry Palm phone handhelds anymore so there's not a way for me to buy one from them discounted. With $599 I could buy another low-end laptop or midrange desktop PC. Is it fair that companies like Palm are charging so much for these devices. I don't remember these phones being nowhere close to that price when Handspring use to make the Treo's, it is why I hated that they had ever merged.

the_game_master

Comments on Palm Treo 700W review roundup: Mossberg says it "doesn't beat 650"

Mossberg is one of those elitist syncophants who thinks they "drive technology" when in actuality are they are succeeding in doing is snobbishly driving away users from legitimate technology products because they do not conform to specifically what they wanted them to be.

JohnS
