I get about one letter a week misdelivered to me that should go to various neighbors, and they get my mail too. I've had a couple WalMart discs in my box that belonged to the folks one street over from me, and I've had Netflix things show up late in my box, opened. Bring on the download rentals. They shouldn't wait for everything to move to Hi-Def, they should start offering this service now.

Of course, the hold up is probably due to the stupid, stubborn movie studios, but Starz is offering all of their movies through Vongo and their downloadable movie service, so I don't know what could be taking so long for on-demand.

I'd love to have a set top box with on-demand service that would allow me to download as many movies as I wanted to in a given month, three at a time, onto the box's HDD. When I was ready to download another movie, one of the three (of my choice) could be deleted to make room for the new one. Now THAT would be primo. And it would eliminate DVD theft.

Z

Comments on Sticky fingered postal workers blamed for Netflix thefts

When Netflix first began, this was a problem. They've started to use different paper in their envelopes that is too wussy to survive our sorting machines. If we run them, the front part rips off, the Netflix address is scanned, and it gets sorted to go back to Netflix. OR it jams and rips into a zilliion pieces. Not to say that theft doesn't happen, just saying that it's not always the carriers fault. Personally I use Blockbuster. The type of envelopes that they use for their dvds survive WAY better. Even when the Netflix envelopes were better, they still wouldn't get read by the machine properly and got sent to a lot of wrong places. They've been a pain in my @$$ ever since they started. You should see when they don't rip, but jam! Think of a dvd getting stuck in your fanbelt. Looks like that.

Emily

Comments on Sticky fingered postal workers blamed for Netflix thefts

I've been a Netflix customer since day one.

Just like clockwork, I have 3-4 Netflix DVDs lost every year and another 3-4 arrive broken -- not just a little crack but usually snapped in half.

I've asked the letter carrier and she says it's probably sorting equipment. I went through several different packing style tests, and I remember that some of the plastic / vinyl wrappers seemed best to me, but I'm sure that they cost more than the paper. The netflix model has to account for disk breakage, so I'm sur the paper is better for them.

I dropped the netflix more because of their queue optimization algorythms than anything else. I was one of the heavy users. I'd get a movie and return it in one or two nights. I was on the first plan that they had, 4 movies at a time for $19.95 and only limited by mailing time. (I think they only had the bay area address at the time) They always pushed my priority on new releases down, and it frustrated me.
