Nintendo announces DS Lite
Nintendo likes to be a little
difficult on us from time to time, but we're stoked that after they decided to redesign the DS, then reneged, that they reneged the
renege and went through with it anyhow -- though honestly, knowing Nintendo, it was an inevitability given their (and
everyone else's) penchant for redesigning their consoles to drive sales. Anywho, their new Nintendo DS Lite skimps on
the size and weight by shaving off 1/3rd of the bulk and 20-percent of the weight, and will apparently be released in
Japan on March 2nd for ¥16,800 (about $145). It's important to remember, however, that the DS Lite we see here may
not be the device that you actually buy, being that these are still considered to be design mock-ups. See ya soon, DS
Lite, can't wait! Japanese release date: March 2, 2006
Weight: 218g (compare to 275g for the current Nintendo DS)
Dimensions: 133mm x 73.9mm x 21.5mm

#59 (Mel), isn't it just the friend code that'll change? If the M3, Supercard, GBAMP etc. work on the DS Lite, I think you'll be able to backup your town as you like and then switch between the two DS's (each with its own friend code.)
#61 (raindog), That's quite interesting to know actually. My comment was relating to how hard it is to adjust to playing the DS left handed with games like Metroid. While a righty can happily use the Dpad to move about a lefty has a bit of a hard time with the buttons. Your movement isn't as quite smooth due not being able to roll your thumb in quite the same way. That's really the only problem I had with it. I was going to by one soon, but I might just wait now.
1. yes, they could've put the screens closer and it's possible w/ current technology; but it would render some games 'awkward' such as Metroid where they calculated the gap in creating 'whole' image of Samus.
2. it does come with GBA slot, so rest assure
3. screen brightness can go up to 5 times
4. If the D-pad is same as GBMicro's then it should be the most intuitive D-pad ever.. personally (just bought a gbm and very satisfied with its D-pad).
The redesign was pointless...
Hey Nintendo! if your gunna make a redesigned DS, make it worth my money! add bigger, clearer screens, add a SD slot (ala gba movie player) or hell also has a SD DUO slot and stab sony in the back with there own media. and if possible. let there be a black color in the states this time.
Nintendo's made it appearent that there handhelds are redesigned when they feel like it, and people will actually buy it! but dont pull a madden on us and make the same shit over and over with a new cover. love the psp, but want the nds better.
I'm delighted. I can't believe how much better this looks than my current DS (which I bought two days ago and will be returning tomorrow).
I hope we get it here in the states before April. I have no interest in importing it for $170+.
Seems a lot of people keep talking out of their butts and aren't doing their research.
Yes, the Nintendo DS, GBA SP, GBMicro AND this upcoming Lite can all play media files with the Play Yan add-on which costs about as much as a decent sized Sony Memory Stick. No it's not in America, but seeing as the DS is region free, I'm sure that wouldn't stop you if you cared to get the job done.
Now, why in God's name you'd want to play anything besides a game on a PSP or DS... well, that's your business, and should just be the sugary letters, and not the icing, on the cake.
Do a poll of these system's users. Ask how many PSP users actually use their system for something other than games. Besides the technologial 1337, of which you're the minority, it's slim.
Yay! I can finally buy a DS!
It looks like it will be good friends with my iPod.
Well we probably all knew it was going to happen sooner or later!
Plus it really needs to happen seeing as how much of an ugly duckling the first DS is.
Nintendo could be the next apple in portable video games...
It would be fun if you could use this as a contoller for the revolution too - double screens for more info etc.
Maybe even some sort of game where one player used the ds and the other the regular contoller in a cooperative style...
Now this is a beautiful console for nintendo.
It is Apple-like :) and way smaller than the original bulky crap...
I would buy DS now! If only they would add memory card support and mp3 playback... :(
Cuuute! I want mine in black, though.
any sushi with that lite??
WHAT???!?!!! you've gotta be kidding me!! A new one so soon?! And when you look at the comparison picture it doesnt look a whole lot better, The microphone thing is in the middle of the system!!! What was wrong with the original anyway? Well, those nintendorks wont be sucking up any of my money!!!
People whine that the original ds was bulky looking, and too big, but this new ds is just barely a little smaller, the buttons are smaller too, and whats the deal with the microphone being in the middle? This "re-make" seems very pointless to me!
Sounds like a new beer.
@ Peter...
Nah, it was most likely ready. Nintendo just doesn't like anyone stealing their thunder. They reveal things only on their own schedule and would be damned before they let some import company say when they will drop their big announcement...I mean do you think they needed 10 extra days to finalize the design?? Or was it just a bit of time to have the furor die down post Jan 16th and reveal at their own leisure??
@ Matthew
"So? It'll still have the same, boring, dumb games.
PSP looks good and does everything right. DS sucks, and if you're going to pay money just to buy a nicer-looking one for the same crap, then I feel bad for you."
Oh boo frickin hoo. I guess that's why DS easily outsells PSP software.
For all their faults, N knows how to make handheld consoles. It's not by accident they've owned the market against all comers for almost 2 decades.
PSP is a fine machine, certainly more powerful in a raw horsepower way...guess what...just about ALL of Gameboy's competitor's were more powerful. Sony isn't some visionary godsend for pushing the envelope. They just join a long list of companies that have tried that track, which is why I lauch at the PSP being called innovative. Just about EVERY company has tried to muscle Nintendo out of the handheld business with oodles of power and flashy screens...and N beat them primarily with a huge brick that had four shades of green...because its all about the games.
And those are squarely in Nintendo's corner.
Sorry buddy, back the better horse next time.
yay ds lite.amen.
"People whine that the original ds was bulky looking, and too big, but this new ds is just barely a little smaller, the buttons are smaller too, and whats the deal with the microphone being in the middle? This "re-make" seems very pointless to me!"
It's a good third smaller...how much smaller do you expect it to get while keeping GBA support and two screens the same size?
you know, just thinking about it, if nintendo didnt abandon sony when they were were both collaborating to make the system after the snes (not the N64) then all of the systems would probably be lot different, incuding handhelds
I've been holding off buying the DS, hearing about all the great games, and waiting for a slick redesign. I'll be picking one up when they arrive stateside!
I really do not like the squares on the front cover...looks boring. Anyway, I like the smooth feeling of the GBA SP when I'm holding it in my pocket...Smooth with no rough bumps. Keep it smooth!!! That's my vote.
i know this is off topic but wasnt there some talk about movies for the ds. like what the psp has.
iDS. Nice...
what if i want a extra fat version
The originals defenently the best. Theres nothing there to hold.Keep making originals nintendo
Keep making origanals nintendo...
keep making originas nintendo
This is so GAY I don't wanna have to spend like 200 dollars for this thing. I mean it DOES look better but it is so ANNOYING that they couldn't have MAYBE keep it the same size change the position of the mic and make the DS capable of better things like 3d quality and many other poor qualitys of the DS. Serously though the PSP has a TV or monotor resolution and has the same and some a little better graphics than the PS2. Nintendoe did the SAME thing with tha Gamboy Advance => Gamboy SP => Gameboy Micro. I mean AHHHH they just keep on takin the DAMN money!! But i am probably gona get one anyway they got me hooked they really got everyone who has a DS hooked you just CAN'T deny it.
Here is some things I want to see the DS do:
1: a controller for the Nintendo Revolution
2: VOIP within Internet game.
I just sold my old DS on e-bay .. haha the nintendogs version ds is going for around $180-$200, I actually sold it for more then I paid for it (SUCKERS)they don't know about the new one yet.. heh, this will fund my new DS Lite when it comes out.. I hope soon cuz I won't have one untill then.
So, my recommendation, go out and start e-baying before the mainstream finds out!
The old DS looks like a dinasaur, so fat and ugly, the new one looks much better and I hope the thumb touch control works better since screen is closer to the left and right edge.
LISTEN UP NINTENDO some RECOMMENDATIONS!
-Is it a cowincidence that the new DS has the same design as the Revolution? Maybe a controller/Map hub for the Revolution? That would be sweet!
-I hope that VOIP (Voice Over IP) in games emerge as new games come out.
-How about a 150 player online war game such as Joint Operations for the PC? Man, I'd buy that game in a heartbeat.
-How about Download play from the Internet!! WOW Previewing/Playing DEMOs would be a totaly awesome and easy experiance! Not to mention download play with your friends over the inet. too!
The DS has soo much more potential then what Nintendo is using.
