You may ask why I say this, well, the reason is because you have just labeled Nigeria as a fraudulent country.
I am very dissapointed at your choice of words. Instead of acclaiming their efforts, you come out publicly in front of the world and ridicule their well-meaning (even though it may not be, knowing that most capitalists are out for a profit) act.
This should also serve as a warning to everyone out there that has'nt heard about "Advance fee - fraud" a.k.a 419. Only a fool or a greedy person, and I repeat, only a FOOL or a GREEDY PERSON will fall for such shenanigans. If you see something that looks too good to be true, then be suspicious and report it to the authorities.
On another note, here is a song from a fellow Nigerian (Nkem Owoh -actor/engineer/comedian/musician) explaining the situation to you in a very funny but realistic song (in broken english a.k.a Nigerian Pidgin English) titled "I GO CHOP YOUR DOLLAR."

CLICK ON THE LINK:
http://www.naijajams.com/trax/video/osuofia_-_I_go_chop_your_dollar.mov

I hope you enjoy it. Nigeria is getting better, democracy has come to stay, as can be attested in the current voter registration and verification exercise. Please tell them we are more disciplined and tutored to manage power in a global scale, let them just let us be, and stop the empowerment of community "never do well", "black sheeps" and "palace singers" to positions of public trust, that has infected us with political and economic down-syndrome.

Innocent Udenkwo

Comments on Google bringing internet to Nigeria

I acknowledge that the Nigerian government and people have been doing a great job cleaning it up. I am sure the large majority of Nigerians are honest hard working people, but you have to admit that with the amount of fraud attempts by Nigerians it is pretty logical that people make these jokes.

I can't list a single cellphone or laptop on ebay without some Nigerian scam artist asking me to ship it to him and wait for him to pay with Western Union, I spend an hour a week removing Nigerian spam from a board I moderate, and I receive over 20 begging letters a week from Nigeria asking me to help rescue their 20 million dollars. Of course you have to be a fool to fall for these tricks, but people DO and people always will. Do we forget about the ills of this country and label every other country out there evil??
I bet you, you probably have'nt set foot out of USA. I've been to UK, Italy and Nigeria. There's a lot to learn from Nigeria. The only problem is the economy and the batch of foolish leaders they have had in the past. There are very few jobs and getting into college is only afforded to the best fit or wealthy who easily buy their way through every facet of life in Nigeria. In my mind, a bigot is someone who discriminates against people. You shouldn't label someone as a bigot because of his desire to satirize. It's what we Americans love to do, and I realize that satire is not so accepted in other countries.

Since almost everyone with an email address has likely at one time or another received a scam email originating from Nigeria (I used to get several a week), it's not surprising that the country would be one of the top perceived most corrupt. See the 2005 list of perceived most corrupt countries here (Nigeria ranked #6.)

http://ww1.transparency.org/cpi/2005/cpi2005_infocus.html

Notice this list is only "perceived", as it's hard to measure actual corruption and of course who is doing the perceiving must be taken into consideration.

Following up on Mustafa's comments, I lived in Asia for four years in the early 90s and have traveled to many countries where bribes are common and expected. When citizens have a largely corrupt government as their role model, it's not surprisng that many of those citizens will accept it as a part of their daily lives and a means to get ahead. This however doesn't justify trying to scam people via the Internet or email.

I applaud Google's efforts even if they are of course profit driven. Google will probably learn some hard lessons in dealing with corrupt government leaders. But the more companies that follow in Google's footsteps, the more the Nigerian govt. and others can learn about doing business based on enforceable laws and contracts rather than bribes.

GaryT

Comments on Google bringing internet to Nigeria

For some reason engadget is messing up the url I entered above. On one hand bringing more technology to Nigeria is a great thing to do, because I feel people really underestimate the opportunities that are there. However, on the other hand Nigerians... can be so greedy and corrupt and are very good at turning things to trash. One of the largest scammers that was arrested was from australia. I sorta take issue with the way this article was titled too. Nigeria has had internet for some time now. It's fairly advanced as far as southern hemispheric countries go. It's not like it consists of jungle villages beating drums to keep in contact. Is it what you read from the internet or have you been there physically. I don't make assumptions based on the internet because it can be very misleading as most of what we see on the internet are personal statements and judgements (note GaryT's inclusion of the transperency report). Transperency, by the way is a European (German I think) company and they rate countries based on what they perceive and not what they know. That was the same way Europeans perceived Africa as the "Dark" continent in the middle ages.

Also please note that Google's announcement came right after 2 investigations, and I reiterate, 2 investigations were made on the progress of the Nigerian economy by two different international companies (I can't recall their names). I don't want to label Google as evil because it is looking out for its' future by creating a niche market in Nigeria, even though internet has been in Nigeria for a while and is spreading rapidly to rural areas. I was there recently and I will tell you firsthand, there are youngsters who sit as we speak trying to defraud another greedy fool. They have 24-hour cybercafes while some people simply purchase a computer and use internet from home.

I will admit Nigeria is corrupt, but the same can be said about USA. USA is not as holy as it is made to sound. Once again, I don't condone the actions of these youngsters, but it is not their fault, there are barely any jobs for these graduates and it is better than picking up arms to kill each other.

Google going into Nigeria will only shed light into the fact that Nigeria is a lot safer than it is "perceived" to be and will improve the country's economy in the long run.

@ Scoobydoo aka Joxes aka Da King,
I feel sorry that you fell for the silly prank e-mails you received. Can you understand this will be the case for at least some time yet? This won't change as long as the average internet-connected person continues receiving scam emails involving Nigeria.

Whether you like it or not, you'll see people make fun of it. Post number 2 was excellent and quite funny, in my opinion. Why? Because most people can relate to it. That doesn't necessarily mean the whole country sucks and all Nigerians suck. Far from it. But we see these things all the time. Until something from Nigeria replaces these scam emails, guess what? Nothing will change. Perceptions of Nigeria will always involve scams. So expect some LIGHT-HEARTED JOKES about Nigeria and try not to take it so personally.

A sense of humour is definitely needed.

Bazza, read the above sentence. Death? Bigots? How about just find a sense of humour and realise that many people's first exposure to Nigeria is the scams in their inbox, and laugh it off. Sure, perhaps Nigeria isn't so bad, but at least understand that perceptions are made on things that hit our faces directly, not things we don't see. I'm sure nobody here thinks all Nigerians are scamsters. But we DO receive lots of scam emails involving Nigeria. Yes?

So try to laugh it off, if you can find some humour and logic in it. Like it or not, our perceptions of Nigeria will be shaped by the annoying spam we receive for some time yet. Joking about it is one of the nicest things we can do (it sure beats whinging about spam).

tekdroid

Comments on Google bringing internet to Nigeria

Dont sit there and assume i dont have a sense of humor. Internet and modern infrastruture is growing rapidly in Nigeria and will continue to grow rapidly with or without google. But even at that, for a Nation of 120+ Millions out of which only about 100K or less have ever used the internet, this is a child's play when compared with identity theft, for instance, in the USA. There are more crimes daily in New York, New Orleans, LA than the whole of Nigeria.
And I do not hold this stereotype against the American media. The reason being that, by nature, no news is news to the average US media except it's negative. Even local news on any US media on a given day will parade at least 80% news about rape, shooting, abduction, robbery, etc. It is the American way of life. That's why average American does not have respect for his next door neighour, let alone people living in a different geographical setting.

Tunde Akinloye

Comments on Google bringing internet to Nigeria

The American media can be held responsible for the 80% ignorant (about non-american matters) society. Fortunately the 20% that are knowledgeable are really good. Unfortunately so long as "news is sold", "ratings control TV", and the sad crave by the american public for some "worse than us" society where we can "do good" to "feel better", this 80% will tend towards infinity.

On the internet, america has also taught the world the meaning and continue to lead in harmful predatory pornography, pedophilia and many other evils that exclude email scam.

Now the above comments show what stereotype sounds like. Satire or not it does not sound nice.

There are criminals everywhere the scam emails only reflect that in the last 5 to 10 yars of the internet, emails have been the main converging point. Fortunately today there is voip, im, blogging, video sharing etc that will shape the next 5 - 10 years.

As internet access becomes more available this change will be more rapid whether google does free wifi in mt view or san fransisco usa or abuja nigeria, it is all the same.

Google will profit in the long term, more folks will find use for the internet that will drown the volume of email scams and a number of folks on this thread will find beter use for their humor than bashing well meaning nigerians simply because they recieved an email allegedly from nigeria.

In my mailbox, emails about ciallis, viagra, pornography and money scams all mean the same thing - SPAM (btw ciallis is no 1 for 3rd year) as opposed to "a certain people are bad". It is SPAM.

nd

Comments on Google bringing internet to Nigeria

It is very funny that in the world we live in today, some people if you all permit me to use the word "idiots" still fall for scams...........why??? because they are greedy and lazy and all they want to do is make quick money.

Yes Nigerians are know for scam just they way Mexicans and Italians are knwon for gangsterism...........At one time America was the most gangster invested nation on earth, today south Africa has the highest crime rate, recently when a South African, an America, a British, Ghanaian, Kenyan etc wants to commit internet fraud they all take the Nigerian identity....... but wester media or press never seek out to investigate properly, Nigeria and Nigerians are to be blamed. Matt or whoever he may be is one of the few Nigerians who have reduced themselves to mere pigs. In fact, I will rather buy a pig rather than by a person like Matt because pigs can be assets while people like Matt are undesireable liability. They are liabilities to themselves, their family, their country and maybe even to God their maker.

I wish to say that the step Google is taking is a commendable one. Google is the best.
