GSM-lovers, we're happy to report that you won't
remain Q-less after all. Although CDMA
carriers will be the first to offer Motorola's Windows Mobile 5.0-powered candybar smartphone, Moto announced today at
3GSM that they are indeed working on a UMTS version of the
Q. This GSM Q will supposedly be available for
"operator trials" in late Q4 of this year, which means all you T-Mobbers and Cingularities will probably have
to wait until 2007 to get your hands on one. Still, if you can hold out for just twelve months or so (ages in the world
of consumer electronics, we know), a shiny new Q will be your reward.
Have they looked at HTC's roadmap? By q4 this thing will look something like that babe you squired home from the bar last night ... you'll be ashamed it's even in your house.
Well, then, the Q will be a 'classic' when it's available on GSM. I mean, how many new models will be there in 12 month? What is Motorola thinking about? Another MPX?
I would hope they at least upgrade the specs for the Q4/Q1 release. No sense in releasing the same old thing.
It's stupid, though, they'll never sell the same volume in CDMA as they could in GSM.

This is really sad for the Moto Q. I hear they are having technical probs with it anyway. And now beign late to market means that Samsung (that we saw on Endgadget yesterday) and other models will get all the marketshare.
Forget it. Love Motorola, but 2007? I may be dead by then! Cingula 8125 seems to be the new direction (unless of course they get the HTC Hermes up and running for Broadband Connect soon).
F Motorola.
They blew it bigtime.
It didn't even have Wi-Fi whne it was announced in 2006 but I'm going to want it in 2007?
Where's the next Treo or Sidekick?
Even that HP 6900 is looking good.
How pathetic can Moto get? By the time the damn thing gets widespread release it will have been 2 years out from the original announcement. WTF?
Every time I read about this stupid device I just get angrier and angrier. Way to go moto - nice way to botch an otherwise good product. By the time it's released the tech will be old and stale.
S.A.B Motorola! Another year of fake Q's for sale on EBay. Yeah baby.
I'm in aggreement with what most have already stated. Moto has blown it with the Q. It might still be one of the most anticipated devices of the year but they have been unable to bring it to market. Giving competitors with far more efficient development and production capabilities a chance to jump in to begin to take market share.
Won't windows mobile 6 be out by the time this ships...sheesh. What's the point?!? Most smart phones will have at least 4gb internal flash by then and have wifi/edge/HDPMCA AND GPS(no high speed internet or GPS on Q=lame). I hope they didn't spend too much r&d on this one...the design is cool and all, but there are already better phones with better features out and I expect that the q will be already obsolete upon release to a thinner model with more modern features. Moto drops the ball again!
Don't you just love it that the article starts off by saying "GSM-lovers, we're happy to report that you won't remain Q-less after all"? When CDMA folks don't have the Q either? In fact, it doesn't look like anyone's gonna have the Q for a while. The projected release date keeps getting delayed, and delayed... I'm this close to giving up on the Q and starting to wait for the Samsung i320, a.k.a. "RazrBerry".
I was excited about the Q until this. I want a WM5 smartphone, and I'm willing to wait a little while, but not a year. And I'm not switching networks for it, either. The 8125 is looking better all the time.
saw it at CES
The keyboard sucked, and no jog dial
The technology may be outdated at its release but it is a sexy lookin device. Wouldn't be surprised if it gets an update. To me, the deal breaker in this phone is the lack of a touch screen.
