Possible Origami pic surfaces on the web
Here's a
little something to start your week, while you wait for that "Week 3" link to light up. This pic surfaced
over the weekend, and is purportedly a new shot of the Origami
device. For the record, we think it's fake, both because the EXIF header includes a little reference to Photoshop CS
(yes, we know that could've been used to optimize it for the web, but still...), and because it looks nothing like the
version of Origami that our
sources have told us is real. Regardless, somehow we suspect this isn't the last creative rendition of Origami
we're likely to see before Microsoft lifts the curtain on the genuine article.

Well, it certainly looks 'Microsoft'. Way too many bottons.
Microsoft tries to revive lagging tablet pc market with new promotion campaign... same old tablet pc product.
Wasn't Origami supposed to run on XP? That looks too much like Vista with Aero.
Thats not microsofts style. To bulky!
That thing is HIDEOUS. If i saw somebody carrying that anywhere, i'd automatically assume it was a damn Neo-Geo Pocket.
Back to the drawing board, Microsoft (If this is a legit picture that is)
The Law and Order gang pictured on the screen is dated by about a year. One of the detectives shown, Jerry Orbach, has been dead since December 2004.
This might be an older version of the device, unless L&O is taking a page from Weekend at Bernies.
What we're not seeing is that device is 17" deep.
You know, for the power supply and battery.
Wow, that looks disgusting. It's like a pager from the early 90's. What uninspired buttons.
Why do people make fakes .. seems like a senseless waste of time to me.
Look, all im saying is, that if m$ wants me to buy one, i t better be able to run.. vista tablet, photoshop, fireworks, and UT2007 'At The Same Time!' O_o
EWWWWW! Leave it to MicroSuck to screw up a really great concept.
Interesting that the power light is dark...
Clearly a fake. That is showing Windows Media 11 with Aero Glass which is a feature of Windows Vista. We already know that the Origami devices will be running Windows XP.
#5...Lines, so how much does Apple pay you to make a comment like yours??
It looks GORGEOUS, and believe me, Apple fanboy scum, if the Origami does indeed have wifi, web, audio/video, gps etc. and the price is comparable to the rumored Apple 4 inch screen video iPod, the Origami will outsell it at least 10 to 1.
>> Thats not microsofts style. To bulky!
You obviously do not know microsofts style.
i hope it looks nothing like this, as it reminds me of looking at the back of a digital camera.
Ok, if this is really how this thing will look then I'd be dissaponited.
If this had been an Apple device, I bet most of the comments would be positive..
I am a fan yours engadget, but it would be nice if more readers with your postings would be concerned with functionality of devices versus the looks. How shallow we've become when we think it's better for a device to look good than to work good (pardon my paraphrasing of Billy Crystal's "Fernando" character from SNL)
I know, I know - It's just peoples opinions..
That's all I'm expressing here is my own as well..
F.A.K.E!
Go to the origami portal and click on the picture to get a LARGE scale one! Look at the display edge on the bottom (looking from the left corner to right corner! It tilts 0.5 - 1.5 degrees down to the right people! C'mon... this is either a good photoshop (with a tel-tale mistake) OR a v.poor screen!!!
I know which one i think it is
feedback so far is quite comical.
"Clearly a fake...We already know that the Origami devices will be running Windows XP"
"We" don't know SQUAT about Origami.
All we know is that Microsoft is stringing people along anxiously waiting for the unveiling. Origami MIGHT be an actual device. But it could also simply be a "form-factor awareness campaign" designed to get people thinking about such a device. Vaporware at its finest.
As for this photo, it is a nice-looking prototype but I would be surprised if any real device would end up looking like that. Why? First, it looks a little too retro... as in early-90's retro. Not old enough to look hip, but new enough to look obsolete. Also, the icons for the buttons are not consistent in their style... looks like a cut-n-paste job.
number 16 - apple wouldnt make something so damn ugly in the first place, there would be no negative comments apart from the MS fanboys, "shock, its white"
and number 13, no it wont outsell the ipod. are you just stupid? how is it even comparable to an ipod? if apple have an itab hidden somewhere, then there is something to compare it to
Name one product shot that isn't edited in Photoshop first... nope!
That thing is FUGLY! I'm seriously considering getting one of these, provided it's specs meet my expectations and needs, however if it looks like that... I know you can't judge a book by its cover, but you surely can judge a brick by its weight. I just can't get over how fugly that thing is... Yuck!
#19-You total idiot, the Microsoft Tablet PC operating system runs iTunes...if the devices were priced within $100, even $200, what competitive advantage would an iPod without wifi, email, web, gps, games, divx, etc. have over Origami?
The tablet PC has been out for years and has evolved. Apple has yet to come out with version 1 of a tablet and who knows if they ever will.
That design would be amazing if it was still 1998.
Uh, I don't get it -- what's so unattractive about this? Looks fine to me. You people are weird.
If it's good enough for Apple fanboys, it's good enough for Microsoft fanboys.
It does look like a flop. Great.
How can this be news when the writer suggests it might be fake? Is this site/blog going to end up being a forum for those clever fakers to show their skillz? What is the point of showing something that is doubted?
Suggestion - stop colluding and possibly encouraging these unsourced, uncorroborated images and report what has some substance behind it. We all know now images can be faked, and the more they are reported the more readers will doubt what they see, even if its true! If this persists, there is a chance the "Engadget" brand will be tainted.
i hope this will be the design its way better than the mock-Up one and the movie one.
Aight, I ain't no apple fanboy, and I gotta say, that thing is pretty fugly. I mean, either make it look good or make it functional...don't make it like that! I mean, WTF is with those buttons? What the hell does that weird-ass squiggly circle do??? The buttons just have these wierd-ass symbols that don't really give any clue at all to what they do...even the iPod uses universally recognized symbols...and the RCA Lyra is even better...it uses TEXT.
Notice the interface looks just like a mac AGAIN hey all you microsoft developers come up with your own look somethin new and ORIGINAL. It just looks like another sad excuse of a product that Microsoft puts together at the last minute (windows ME) cough cough.
I hope that this is an earilier verison because i was intrested in the product when i first heared about it.
I'll buy one even if it does look like this.
#19 (neale):
"apple wouldnt make something so damn ugly in the first place"
What?? Don't you remember February 28th??? Damn, apple fanboys have short memory retention!!
It's probably fake, but I don't see why people think it's ugly. It looks simple and professionally designed. A device aimed at productivity doesn't need fad styling.
You all do know that MS isn't the hardware designer for this, right? MS does the OS. Intel does the chip. 3d party manufacturers make the hardware. Result: You don't like that design? Buy a different design from a different manufacturer (or a different model).
That's the problem with MacHeads... they can only think in 1 dimension (Apple puts the "mono" in monopoly that does it all)
Has no one seen this video on You Tube? Its hard to believe that this video would be a fake:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rV1WGDW37c0&search=project%20origami
#19 Actually you are talking out of your behind. If you take a look at the source code on the Origami Project's site you'll see "Origami Project: the Mobile PC running Windows XP"... that would mean IT'S NOT RUNNING VISTA.
So evidently "YOU" don't know squat about it, but other more, dare I say educated, people evidently do.
That said this is one of two thing: 1) A fake or 2) An early mockup of what the device migth be... I think that we can safely see the resemblence to the Origami units shown in the year old video.
Bottom line is we should know more by the end of this week. I'm interested in it for sure and if the price is right I might replace my PDA.
I would just like to point out the the device looks very similar to IBM designed laptops. Maybe this is a concept IBM Origami device.
And I think it looks pretty darn good!!
#2 lol that's exactly what I think.
and you know what,a bunch of MS Zombies will be like, OMGWTFBQ best invention ever iPod killer
So in the video, I assume the guy taking picture on the hill doesn't have access to WiFi at that point. So is it a logical conclusion that this will have some sort of satellite connection and GPS?
Isn't that the new ipod video with intel???
If the screen is 7 inches, how big IS this device? 9 inches? That seems monstrously large for what's being dangled about.
I'll wait for Thursday to see the official announcement. My money's on a 'true' ultraportable (1-2 pounds, 300-700$) running something akin to a Centrino 1.8GHz.
I'd buy one. Maybe not first gen, because designs could suck, but I'd buy one once a decent looking one came out.
My favorite gripe so far is that this appears to be running Vista, when in fact it should be running XP.
I mean, because it would obviously be impossible for Microsoft to whip together a new shell for XP. The current Windows shell would fall flat on its face on a device like this (assuming at least half of what we believe it is for is true...). It would almost be a no brainer for Microsoft to give XP a fresh face, especially since they are announcing this new platform so close to the release of Vista.
Or not, whatever, just an opinion.
I'm not saying this image is real, but, yeah, just a thought.
I somewhat agree with #45, Microsoft is trying to introduce a new type of PC, the Lifestyle PC.The first round of products aren't going to live up to many of the expectations:
it's not gonna be under a pound, it will be running a Centrino, and sadly will not gonna have an all-day battery life(8-12hrs), probably looking at 3-5 hours. Intel is working on a new low-power chip for mobile devices and should be ready next year. Sadly, we will have to wait out a few of the rounds of products and at least until next year before we start seeing the "ULTRA" mobile PC. For now, it will be a Slightly-More-Mobile-Than-A-Laptop PC. But I'm still getting one (as long as it's around $500).
bahah, woops. I mean #43
my bad
Well, this particular version is UGLY.
I prefer the version we saw in the video.
It does look somewhat old..but I'd really have to lay hands on it for a final judgement.
"It looks GORGEOUS" - Jcee
Haaaar heeee heee, thanks for the chuckle Jcee. Good one!
And if you're serious, I'll guess you drive a Pontiac Aztek?
If this is real (which I doubt), MS managed to include a drop of good taste - a tiny white (!) iPod scroll wheel. Ah. Freedom To Innovate in action again. At least Jcee will buy one - there's one sale!
I agree with many of you that say this device is ugly and if this is the final product (which I doubt) then it needs major revision. This is the epitome of the PC world’s sorry ass attempt to try and make something that looks nice and that is functional. I am going to wait for Apple to make some sort of "iSlate" that is beautiful, easy to use, and feature rich.
