Samsung YP-U2X on sale in the US
Samsung YP-U2,
here. Get yer Samsung YP-U2, here. It's a little less classy than its predecessor with the fold-out USB port, but Samsung's 512MB YP-U2X --
previously seen at CES -- is now available
online for $70, four line LCD display, FM tuner, voice recorder, PlaysForSure support (sorry though, this one's sans
OGG), 13 hour battery and all.

They never tell you that you have to use their software to get music onto it. Maybe some people see it as minor but it's an absurd feature (bug in my opinion). Everyone is trying to lure (trick) you into their music DL service. I don’t know if Samsung does the same so hopefully someone else knows.
With all of the oddball players out there I'm gun-shy about getting a new one. It’s the one feature I would kill for and they never tell you in the adds. I have an iriver that I never use because of it. I almost bought a sony but they had the same problem and ipod is leading the 'use our software' charge.
It's a shame about the lack of OGG support, plus it's not a little less classy than it's predecessor, it's a LOT less classy.
I think it looks RAD. Exactly what I'd want if I actually wanted an MP3 player.
Haven't OEMs realised that the cut-off is 1GB! IL BASTARDO'S!
:-P
noppe!
I'm kind of glad I snapped up the previous 512 MB model for $69.

@#7 - apponipod is ok, but you should really have a look at www.portableapps.com - thats the real deal.
I have the apps on a 1 gig sandisk cruzer and cannot live without it now. A friend of mine has them all installed on his 4 gig ipod. Works great.
To #1 "glacia00"
I my self had 3 Ipods.... 4 MiniDisk Players...
1 Lyra..... Others. I just dont remember
I HATE THEM ALL..
DUMPED THE IPODS BECAUSE:
I had to install Itunes.... shure ther are other software you can get to use to transfer songs back and foward... but it gets glitchie...
I got multiple COnmputers.. And the PODS get married to 1 of them... meaning that you can only put songs in it from that PC.. Theres ways around it.. but it just shouldent be that way ;(
2 of my ipods died... I got a Refurb, and traded it to my friend before It Died on me again...
DUMPED THE MINIDISK's BECAUSE:
I Hate Sonic stage....... SONY puts all this jumk on your PC... erm... I gotta say that I would prefer Itunes over this.. but I Hate them both..
If you wanna fit more than 30+ songs.. lets say about 80 on the minidisk... you have to wait for them "CONVERTIONS" to be make... ther goes about 1 HR to get your songs in the Minidisk... not cause of transfers.. the coverting LAAGS
Same with LYRA... had to use 3rd Party software to work...
So... one day I came Across.. ARCHOS
I LOVE THIS MP3/VIDEO player.. its small.... its DRAG&DROP,,, no Damn software to install...
no damn hassle.... I got the GMINI400... but now thers a Camcorder edition... same size, but now you can record on the go.
Have them both... Not much of a difference between the 400&402, but minor things... .CAM-USB"HOST"- are the things that the 402 has
Only bummer thing I can see on these is that there both 20GB, Ipod has up to 60,
I rather have a HAPPY 20GB with more features... than a frustrating 60GB,,,
Would this work with linux. I am currently using a MuVo 256. But I have to manually rm * and cut and past to update podcasts... What are the good linux (Ubuntu) compatible mp3 players?

Agreed, Archos makes a great device as far as functionality. My significant other has one of their older 20G players. They are the best device in that size. Sadly I bought (as I mentioned) the iriver not knowing that you had to use their software. Now I’m reluctant about every player out there because manufacturers have realized consumers are stupid enough to believe they need the software that it seems everyone is jumping on the bandwagon.
Egad, why would anyone want a device that forces you into using separate software to load something onto flash memory? No way around it, it's just stupid.
Whets next proprietary software for loading thumb drives? It's essentially the same device. And no doubt people will argue there also "but I use the 'best' software to load my thumbdrive." No, you're just stupid.
NO radio FM
Love my iAudio X5. It comes with the usual crappy software, but you don't have to use it. It also acts as a USB host.....and the audio is fabulous. MP3, OGG, WMA, WAV, FLAC.
2 downsides that don't bother me, but might bother you:
Didn't support online stores, but I don't use them. Supposedly a firmware update would be along to fix that, but I never checked.
Needs a subpack or cradle to connect to a computer, but it's small.
I have the Samsung YP-U1 and it's awesome. You don't need software to put songs on it, just plug it in and the computer recognizes it just like a USB drive. It comes with software, but you don't have to install it. It also charges from the USB port. FM tuner is a new feature.
Hopefully the YP-U2 retains the good features from the UP-U1, namely being able to transfer files without specific software.
I have Samsung U1 also.
I also debated over 'the beautiful' ipods but decided to go with the flexible.
You don't need the extra software(and yes Sony really, really blows...) all as Mr. Eric describes above.
Only down side is...the battery problem. Samsung needs to start working on batteries and accessories.
I just bought one of these the other day. Seems like there's some missing information going around.
1. There is ogg support
2. There is an FM tuner
Buzz re: Linux support
I'm using this on my Ubuntu desktop. Its just a matter of drag and drop. Linux sees it as a mass storage device so no having to worry about any funky programs to get it working.
Would this work on a MAC? I'd gladly forego a apple shuffle for this sweet player. It seems silly that a flash drive wouldn't work on a mac... but you never know...
iPod's get married to PC's only when you select automatic synchronization of your library, which is kind of logical. Otherwise, you can use as many PC's or Mac's as you want with your iPod.
At least it works this way with the unprotected files. Can't say about FairPlay files, because, living in Poland, I cannot buy anything form ITMS.
Joel,
I've tried this out on my wife's Powerbook. It appears on the Desktop like a standard usb key and you just drag files onto it (just like I do with my Ubuntu Linux desktop :-) )
I just picked up one of these, and it will not show up as a removeable drive on my powerbook G4... the LCD just says "MTP CONNECT" and then "CHARGING." I tried to flash the firmware (from a friends PC to run the update exe file) with the international version to enable UMS mode, but the instructions that come with it are translated korean, and nearly impossible. Can anyone who has had success with this player and a Mac, or successfully updated the firmware give me some step by step instructions? alternatively, can anyone recommend another direct-insert, UMS, FM, rechargeable flash player with and LCD? i want to be able to use it as a thumbdrive and also update podcasts with myPodder from other computers, so the shuffle is not an option (plus the shuffle sucks). wow, long post. thanks alot.
