Sony's PlayStation 2 now only $129.99
Remember
way back in October of the year 2000, when Sony introduced the PlayStation 2 for $299.99? Yeah, that was a long time ago, but
if you still don't have one, don't feel like getting a 360 or
waiting any longer for the PlayStation 3 -- whenever the hell that'll be released -- or just want another PS2
for around the house, you'll be pleased to know Sony once again dropped the price on the PS2. Now the diminutive
console will run you $130, down twenty bucks since the console's standing price since its last cut about two years ago.
They're still not gonna beat out Nintendo's ever-cost effective $99 GameCube, but hey, when it comes to games, we know
for a lot of people it just ain't
about the price.

My PS/2 Was stolen not so long ago, along with a bunch of games.
The good news is that with this price change there will be a corresponding change in price for the used PS/2s
GT4 I'm coming back to you baby!

PS/2 is the keyboard/mouse port on computers' motherboards.
PS2 is the console.

I'm still waiting for a $99 point.

$129.99 will encorage many people in Asia to have a go for the PlayStation. 20$ may not seem to be a lot of money but for most people in Asia, it is more than a day's income. So, Sony should address this market.
Jeff @ Apr 20th 2006 10:50AM
Yeah, a $20 drop is kind of pointless. Honestly, I think this is a bad business move - it's a huge psychological difference seeing $99 vs. $149 (it's a whole other digit taken off!) but $129 vs. $149? I mean, that's a couple of McDonald's extra value meals where I live. It's not really relevant.
I don't see this bumping sales up enough to offset the lower price. A move to $99, though, would have been a major story. But I'm sure they had their reasons; maybe it still costs more than $99 to make this thing (kinda doubt that).
Kev50027 @ Apr 20th 2006 11:00AM
I think it's a good move for Sony. They are notorious for charging high prices for stuff, and the PS2 is no exception. Even though I just got a slimline PS2 a few months ago, I'm glad the price was dropped, I know several people who still don't have one, and this might change their decision on whether to get one or not.

Uh, you do understand that this price drop is only effective in America, and that if someone in Asia buys an American PS2, they won't be able to play games from their local region without modding, right?
Dan @ Apr 20th 2006 11:05AM
I agree Jeff. Had it been knocked down to $99 I might have considered buying a new slim console to replace my (very old) PS2. But now I'm just save that money for a DS Lite...
JCA @ Apr 20th 2006 11:15AM
Is there anyone else out there who is waiting for new Guitar Hero games to come out before buying their first PS2? :)
jcg @ Apr 20th 2006 11:24AM
@ djsyndrome , here in the Netherland slimline ps2's now cost 129 euro so I don't think the price drop US only.
jr @ Apr 20th 2006 11:24AM
Does anyone know what happend to the original XBOX console? This email made me check into buying one of those new - figuring the price must be cheap nowadays (i'm still using the original psone).
Can't find it for sale anywhere, is it discontinued? Only 360's now??
Abubyu Fahid @ Apr 20th 2006 11:25AM
Hello my friend.
A word to the wise. You can get a Sega Dreamcast for around $20.00.
A much wiser entertainment machine.
dextro @ Apr 20th 2006 11:25AM
arrrrggggg I just bought an x-box for the exact same price... :S
Scarpad @ Apr 20th 2006 11:27AM
Where can you get the Dreamcast games still I still have mine. As far as the PS2 goes, if it went for $99 I would've picked one up for MLB06, but not at $129
dj-ronald-mc-donald @ Apr 20th 2006 11:29AM
Why piss away $130 on an old console?
Try your local Disc Replay store and you can get used Gamecubes for $30 and Playstation 2's for $50.
That is the most I would spend on old stuff like this.
Check ebay too, I found a dreamcast with 6 games for $14.
Asian Voice @ Apr 20th 2006 11:34AM
I loved my dreamcast and the shenmue series game.
I'm regretting that I ever traded it in on a PS2:(
Time for me to check ebay for my SEGA fix.
The sports games on dc were off the hook!
dj-ronald-mc-donald @ Apr 20th 2006 11:38AM
to post # 12.
You can still get used and new DC games at www.ebay.com
also try any form of videogame resale store/shop like ebgames, gamestop, disc replay, etc.
Some of the best games ever made came out on the dreamcast console.
Galley @ Apr 20th 2006 11:53AM
Hey Sony, make it $99.99, and I'll hook one up to every TV in the house!
yuppicide @ Apr 20th 2006 12:50PM
I don't own any consoles except classic stuff like Atari 2600, Colecovision, etc.
I once bought an Xbox and sold it within a few weeks because I didn't really find any games I wanted.
If I got a PS2 it would only to play a few select games: Mr. Driller series of games, and some game from the PS1 I remember that you were in a nightmare.
Princess Zelda @ Apr 20th 2006 12:52PM
If Sony brings down the price for the memory cards I may take a second look but I have some money saved up for either a DS Lite is or the Nintendo Revolution. I'll wait till after E3 to see how much Revolution will cost and decide then.
Jhon @ Apr 20th 2006 3:15PM
This isn't a price drop that should be making headlines...
I traded my ps2 two yrs ago, Now I want a slim to play KH II and FFXII.
I 'll wait till some retailer throws in a free dvd remote.

I live in Thailand, The PS2 here is $300 - the same price I can nip over to Japan and get the top end xbox360 for.
Its 6 years old - shouldn't they have been able to build it into a joystick/controller yet.
Shadyman @ Apr 20th 2006 5:08PM
The original XBox is still around, and you can buy it (usually bundled with games) at retail stores like Best Buy or EBGames. You can get a refurb XBox from EBGames.com for $119 US

I hope you Americans realise how lucky you are in regard to Video Game pricing - In UK PS2 still costs 104 GBP (114.99 with 1 game) so it is nearly twice as much as US :(
Perrey Z. @ Apr 21st 2006 11:28AM
This is MSRP {List Price}, retailers might offer it for less., although i have notice video games are the ONLY electronics products that are NEVER offered below the MSRP.

Greg,
$114.99 GBP is way more than $129 US... think currency exchange rates!
$115 Great Britain Pounds is about $205 American.

I'm actually seeing some special pricing for PS2 with 1 game for $99. Just dropped in the last couple weeks around here.. US, Pacific Northwest. We are usually the last to feel any wave of change.
