Unless we live in some kind of freaky bizarro-world, it would make absolutely no sense for Apple to significantly modify their current iPod lineup (except for memory and battery life and perhaps processor speed) in the next year or two. Why the hell would they release a higher-res, widescreen video device that would make their 320x240 iTunes videos look like crap? Hello, news flash: video content on iTunes is still relatively new. They're not going to start changing their video specs anytime soon. Does anybody realize how expensive and complicated that would be? Not to mention that it would undoubtedly confuse and/or piss off consumers. I think these tech geeks need to pull their heads out of their asses and realize that the average iPod enthusiast is actually NOT waiting in baited anticipation for an imaginary touchscreen model that plays nonexistent widescreen content; they're waiting for the iTunes Music Store to offer more programming and better pricing options. Apple has already established a standard resolution for their video content; they're going to stick with it for the time being.

Steve

Comments on PortalPlayer still an iPod playa?

a TOUCH SCREEN video ipod!?!

Why the hell would I want to smudge up the screen with my grubby paws before watching a video? Being the owner of a 3G iPod, I dont feel that the current video model is anything special worth an upgrade. However if I could convert my widescreen DVDs to a watchable format and if it were a higher res video then what the current stuff is , it would be a very worth while upgrade. Also the idea of getting rid of the controlls and making it all screen is very appealing if they figure out a good touch screen surface that does not get easily scratch or show fingerprints.

AJ

Comments on PortalPlayer still an iPod playa?

Hey, so, uh, engadget, WHEN WAS THE 6G IPOD WITH VIDEO and widescreen touchscreen announced?!? I have found my iPod to be very bugging and generally disappointing. The combination of poor battery life, worthless video feature and limited features have left me frustrated again and again. For me, the iPod peaked in its 3rd generation...and since then its quality and design have fallen pray to high demand and limited competition. There are far too many problems with this "touch screen" design and the constent non-news on this non-existant product is tiresome.

Echid

Comments on PortalPlayer still an iPod playa?

screw the video ipod, give me a 100gig 4g and i'll be happy. my 40gb 4g has been full for a year and i dont want to buy the 60gb 5g because i already have over 60 gigs of music. give me a bigger hard drive and a good battery life and i'll be fine.

touchscreen ipod is fraught with problems and the solutions all involve buttons on the sides and a blackberry like scroll wheel.

khamel

Comments on PortalPlayer still an iPod playa?

"For me, the iPod peaked in its 3rd generation.."

For this very reason, I kept my 40GB 3rd Gen when I got my 60GB Video iPod.
