Just in case you didn't manage to catch Sony's E3 presentation, or can't handle scrolling through
our liveblog of the event (though we can't imagine why that would be the case), here's what you need to know about the PS3 launch, straight from the conference floor: "Today we're pleased to announce the global PS3 launch details. We will make PS3 available via a two-configuration plan. One with a 60GB HD. And the other with a 20GB hard drive.
Japan's date: Nov. 11. In Japan 59,800 Yen. The 60GB PS3 will have an open price which retailers will set. In
North America [to launch Nov 17]: 20GB for $499, 60GB for $599. Europe has 20GB for 499 Euro, 60GB for 599 Euro. 2 million to ship worldwide during the launch window. 4 million by end of calendar year 2006. By March 31, 2007 they'll have shipped 6 million worldwide." Any questions? Then start scrolling through
the liveblog. You know you want to.
Microsoft has to be the most happy about this announcement. Some people will still get it for the BlueRay, but Sony isn't going to win the HD format war with a $600 game player. They were going to have to price a LOT more competitively to make it a significant factor in a format war. This has got to be bad news for Sony fanboys.
...especially if Microsoft drops their console and has theirs readily available for the holidays. You can be sure Sony PS3 will be in short supply, and with a much higher pricetag. Microsoft looks to clean up.
Um, Europe's high price also reflects a higher cost of doing business in Europe. If you don't like high prices, tell your governments to lower business taxes, regulations, etc. If, however, you have a fairly liberal political point of view, admit that high prices are a direct result.
Unless, of course, you're a full-blown socialist or communist and believe in a completely government-controlled economy with fixed prices, in which case you don't get to buy any decent products at all. So, the price wouldn't matter for you - you can't get what you want except on the black market.
The people who dont want the Blu-Ray obviously dont own a HDTV. And, anyone complaining about the $499-$599 price also must not have a HDTV, and are more than likely in High School. If you dont own a HDTV, and are in High School, then you should just stick to the original Xbox, because it makes no sense to buy a next gen system if you cant play the games in HD form. Grow up, finish school, and worry about PS3 when youre old enough to appreciate the value. PEACE.

with that money, just buy a dps3. 600 bucks for 60gig drive?!?!?!?!??! i mean whi needs 60gigs of memory. those are gonna be stacked in the clearence isles a few months after release. 40gig is nore reasonable. the xbox360 is 400 bucks with 20gig. plus the blu-ray still- thats not 500 bucks!!!!! this is and outrage!!!!!! i repeat:

What Sony needs to do is release its PS3 Nov 2007 rather than 2006, because noone has Blu-Ray movies yet, nor does anyone really have 1080p HD-TVs. LISTEN TO ME SONY RELEASE YOUR PS3 NOV 2007 AT $400 AND $500 AND YOU'LL MAKE WAAAY MORE SALES!!
Yea, i def. agree, the PS3 is pretty expensive. BUT keep in mind it's gonna be a hot buy, its not like Sony came out with the price on day either. I'm sure that they probably had some surveys. I remember myself saying that I was willing to spend 500-600 bucks on a system just like it. Think about this though. It is a computer entertainment system. Why spend so much on a computer? Who truly knows. Items in the computer world are always geting bigger(or smaller) and better. Prices go down on new things. Just like the PS2. Its half the price now as it was when it came out. At least Sony plans on releasing this farther back from the winter season than I thought. But Black Friday... >:O A Samsung Blu Ray Player alone is how much now? $1000? Yes it is. Same as the Sony price. Sony is pretty awesome to let brand new technology come at such a low cost. They'll make up for it in games, sure. But still, 600 dollars for something that will come with a hard drive and a powerful processor as well. I think the price should stay pretty stable. Its sort of a blessing in disguise really.

The whole Blu-Ray thing would be a helluva lot more attractive if it wasn't for the spectre of that "bonus" being in the long run the tech equivalent of buying a gaming system that plays beta tapes and MiniDiscs. If there was any sense in the tech world and a standard for HD discs was decided upon instead of launching yet another format war then yeah, BluRay is a great bonus feature.
However you are already buying into the next step in an as of yet unresolved format war by taking sides in the Microsoft v Sony home console battle so getting two possibly crippled useless chunks of tech at an oh-so-glamorous 6 bills cover charge ain't so damn appealing to me.
stfu ps3 is good considering all da stuff its got in it it should of cost £1000 but no it dont so stop crying about da price ill get a wii and ps3 and if 360 goes down ill get dat to 60gb more for £100 dats good da wii is good but not better dan ps3 the only reason nintendo price has gone down because it knows sony was gonna sell more but still if u complain means u cant afford one so stop crying and complaining when u cant notin about it i rest my case :]
dumb asses
wtf that price is stupid ass hell
Will a Japanese model work in the UK???
If you think about it, current BlueRay players are selling for 999.99 at most electronic retailers. On top of this you get, the next generation in hit titles, bluetooth wireless (the most conveniant wireless system to date) built-in HDMI, backwards compatibility, built-in wireless a/b/g, 60Gig hard-drive, free internet neighboorhood (unlike Microsoft's 70bucks a year).. Let's price all that. BlueRay (1000), Bluetooth array (BT Cell phones go for 500 bucks non-new contract price), HDMI output (most HDMI TV's are valued at 3grand; the HDMI out-of-the-box kit runs 450), Wireless (an a/b/g wireless card from Cisco is valued at 250 dollars), Free internet. Add that up; I think Sony is the one getting ripped off.
how much is the 60Gb version going to be on sale for in japan...and does the PS3 only come with one controller
Looks like Sony didn't learn their lesson from the Betamax era. 600 bills is a lot to pay in a format war. And remembering what happened on the 80's with the VHS Betamax war, I think im gona go with the less expensive comparable in quality 360. All those people who bought beta instead of VHS were SOL when sony dropped the less popular format. I beleive the same is going to happen with the ps3. Besides the 360 is crazy badass, Mavel Ultimate Aliance has had me caught up for the last week. Im gonna buy the Wii for Zelda of course, but all Nov 17 means to me is
HALO 3.
sony is crazy and for those of you who think the price is fine, considering the stuff...did you mean, the motion senstive controller/rip-off of Wii? or the "gr8" graphics that you can't really tell? or even the HD/rip-off of Microsoft's idea? they should stick to the memory cards to make it cheaper...
wat about in malaysia.????????? when does the console launch in malaysia?
Sony is freakin rediculous some game stores are making people buy assecories for the damn thing with the system or they cant get it I think this is the lowest sony has gotten cause after I prebought my ps3 is when i herd this info. Im thinking about getting my money back and bying a Wii and using the rest for games and my cpu.
those who want to send me there thoughts send them to Marine3988@bellsouth.net thank you.
I'll Stick to my 360 until price goes down
can anyone build a game to fill a blue ray ?
Got a 360 and loving it. Cant wait for HD DVD drive to be released for 360 as this will be the format of the future. Blue ray,( Otherwise known as BD) , well... do some research and see for yourself, you dont need to hear it from me. Its over before its begun unfortunately and the great Sony moneyspinner will lose on this one. Thats what you get for being so blatantly sure of yourself. I hope people wake up and smell the coffee, and reolise that the ps3 is not all that it makes itself out to be. more like a glorified Toastie machine..
i wish people would stop all the moaning! every system has good points every system has bad points! yeah ps3 is expensive (for average gamer) but its an awesome piece of kit so its justified, plus the price will fall (cutting edge technology costs)! 360 again awesome piece of kit will be in the same region as ps3 price when the HD-DVD addon comes out. Wii, what can you say, its gonna be ace! people need to stop being childish! yeah people have their favourites but so what.
i have a 360 and will not be buying the HD-DVD addon, blu ray is the future and ill be using this to its full potential when i get my ps3! will probably buy wii for the kids (or me when i get back from the pub)
conclusion
360 - Everyone go and get one (minus HD-DVD) theyre ace
ps3 - Amazing value for your 600, futureproofed
Wii - Fun Fun Fun
p.s
the ps3 being expensive for the average gamer is where sony could fail but i really hope not and i doubt it very much! theyre a massive company and would have thought about all these things!
long live 360/ps3/Wii games have never been so good!
