I'm no mathematician, but I don't think it's been 75 years since the NES was released. Also, the whole "If you own the original cart, it's alright for you to have the ROM" is an old wive's tale, and was made up by pirates to console other pirates. You know, to make them feel like they're not doing something as illegal. They mention demo downloads via the DS. That doesn't make sense...isnt this thing supposed to be connected 24/7 to the network? So why download demo's via the DS's WiFi when you could use the Wii's network connection? And if its the reverse, why download DS demo's via the Wii when you could use the DS's WiFi?

And the DS as a controller just sounds dumb, I mean, hello, the GBA as a GC controller (for all of like two games) was lame and gimmicky and never took off, and the DS, even the Lite, is not exactly the most ideal shape for a controller.

I dunno, I would rather they not do gimmicky crap and just integrate them if and when they have a really good idea. I love Final Fantasy but the four swords game was basically off limits to me because the gimmicky crap neccisary to play it (four people with GBA's or whatever). I'd much rather not hear about another really cool game I want to play, ruined by somebodies need to integrate just for the sake of integrating.

Also, those game prices are still too high. Much as I would love to buy some old Genesis roms (sonic 2, that means you!) I wouldn't pay more than...I dunno, a couple bucks. If the hit titles require me to shell out $10 a pop for something that, given the download size is going to be miniscule at best, has almost no distribution costs, and was allready a cash cow a decade ago, yeah, no thanks, I'll stick to playing rom's on my PC with a really nice gamepad.

Alcaron

Comments on Nintendo announces Wii Virtual Console pricing

Man, this is going to be great, but .99 cents would be a great starting point for them.

ken

Comments on Nintendo announces Wii Virtual Console pricing

Not bad, not bad at all.

Pete Avila

Comments on Nintendo announces Wii Virtual Console pricing

My prediction:

NES games will be $0.99. Copyright extends to 70 years after the death of the author as listed in Title 17, Chapter 3, Section 302 of copyright law, titled: 302. Duration of copyright: Works created on or after January 1, 1978. The following is an excerpt detailing the duration.

"(a) In General.— Copyright in a work created on or after January 1, 1978, subsists from its creation and, except as provided by the following subsections, endures for a term consisting of the life of the author and 70 years after the author’s death.
(b) Joint Works.— In the case of a joint work prepared by two or more authors who did not work for hire, the copyright endures for a term consisting of the life of the last surviving author and 70 years after such last surviving author’s death."

If you want to read the rest of the duration provisions please go to: http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode17/usc_sec_17_00000302----000-.html

As for "the Old Wives Tale" you are not entirely correct. Console games fall under the copyright laws for computer programs, which details that the owner may make a copy of programs they own for backup and archival purposes (see: http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode17/usc_sec_17_00000117----000-.html). This makes it perfectly legal to possess ROM copies of programs you have legally purchased. The problem of legality comes up when the ROMs are played. It is illegal to play them, as they are meant to be kept as backup and archival copies only, in case something should happen to the original program. Now some Emulator sites actually only host ROMs from authors who have given permission for distribution and use. In those cases it would be legal to possess and use those ROMs.

Now, keep in mind these are U.S. copyright laws and may vary by country and/or region.

tristanfey

Comments on Nintendo announces Wii Virtual Console pricing

Finally some comp for XBL!
