Always a trade off. With a 40GB internal you won't be keeping to much media on the device so some kind of external is needed. Add a USB or FW drive and get noise or add a backend media server. Either way it takes a high prices and bumps it higher. Most Via MII boards over 1GHz have a CPU fan. I agree about the noisy hard drive.
