$1600 will get you about what the $2000 macbook pro (though you can't get a processor or graphics card as wuick as the MBPs)

then again, for the extra $400, i'd much rather have a prettier, more stable machine that can not only run XP but also OS X. ...but that's just me.

As far as Dell laptop explosions, I don't know what to tell you. We use them internally and every single one of our portable fingerpriting units have them. Not a single problem yet. Some of them have been out in the field for years now. And you want safety? Every HP I've touched has shocked the hell out of me when I touch a cable. Pretty bad when I have to pull the power just to move a USB cable. And no, it's not a static shock. I also have my old custom Pav that I got in 2000 and it is still going strong and I have been able to upgrade it no problem throughout the years.

I ran some PassMark performance tests and was only scoring in the low 300-ish range. That shocked me, based on my perceived performance parts inside. The biggest slowdown was that SATA HD, which had +/- 4 Mb/sec in/out. Very disappointing.

The case has an interesting HP imprint design. Eh. Not that pretty, really. And it's sooo slippery, that it would be easy to drop this thing if your hands were damp with perspiration.

I think I'll consider a Toshiba Satellite A100 perhaps. Comparable price, and I've had good luck with Toshiba.

HP should stick to printers, overpriced ink, and mediocre cameras. When it came out last week on that same very first day it got out I order this monster to come home to papa. I bought the DV9000 with of course AMD Turion 64 x2 2ghz, with 512mb, 160gb HD (I already ordered the 2gb memory and 320gb HD...yes...2x of 160gb HD from mwave.com), with 17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680x1050), HP IMPRINT Finish + Microphone + Webcam, LightScribe Super Multi 8X DVD+/-RW w/Double Layer, 802.11a/b/g WLAN & Bluetooth, WinXP Pro, & HP Mobile Remote Control. I can't wait to get this beast and install all those stuff to it. LOVE IT BABY!!!

Now I can Dj with confidence when I use my Serato now.

HP's desktops are also top notch. The problems they had in one series of desktops made almost 8 years ago don't apply to any machine they market today. And mind you, the Pavilion 5000 series sitting in the back of my room right now has been reliably running all day every day for the last 5 years without ever giving me a problem - including surviving hurricane Katrina.
