Apple's Mighty Mouse finally gets Bluetooth
Looks like Apple forgot to file for ye olde confidentiality agreement, but today an FCC filing showed off Apple's latest device: the Mighty Mouse with Bluetooth. If anyone's surprised, well, that'd be pretty silly of you being that a wireless / Bluetooth Mighty Mouse is what's been asked for of Apple since day one of the peripheral's release. So, who's got odds that they'll finally freaking fix those pitiful squeeze triggers on the side? By the way, for those not interested in poring over the manual, expect the "M6" (the device's listed codename) to be powered by AA cells -- not by an internal rechargeable battery (i.e. don't expect a little dock or USB plug, bucko).
P.S. -Yes, as pointed out, it would also appear this Mighty Mouse is a laser driven device, for increased optical precision. But c'mon, you know it's really the Bluetooth that's got you paying down your credit card.

Finally!
Pitiful squeeze triggers? They work just fine for me, maybe you are to weak to press them?
Ryan @ Jul 24th 2006 5:03PM
Freaking finally!!
blackout @ Jul 24th 2006 5:07PM
looks more crammed together inside (yes i did go inside mine to clean it once)
altogether, looks kickass.
i wonder what the battery life is.
Bob @ Jul 24th 2006 5:09PM
I bet Jobs will call this "cutting edge" just like the video.
Craig @ Jul 24th 2006 5:12PM
Cool, i hope they don't price this too expensive, it would go perfectly with a MacBook (still hoping to convince parents...)
Kevin @ Jul 24th 2006 5:12PM
What Bob?
Tech^CF @ Jul 24th 2006 5:14PM
So now all Apple owner don't need Microsoft Intellimouses which have been bluetooth and OSX compatible forever?
Nice!
narco @ Jul 24th 2006 5:18PM
Great, so now I can finally throw this mouse out of frustration without unplugging it first. Seriously, I've been a Mac user for 12 years and this is by far the worst piece of shit Apple has ever released. I've gone through 6 of them in the year they've been out.
Fishes,
narco.
blackout @ Jul 24th 2006 5:19PM
"So now all Apple owner don't need Microsoft Intellimouses which have been bluetooth and OSX compatible forever"
how about you try the proper trackball and expose working =]
josh @ Jul 24th 2006 5:21PM
great... when's it get a 2nd mouse button? That would be more useful.
RyanK @ Jul 24th 2006 5:24PM
You may wanna read up on it a little more josh.
harry @ Jul 24th 2006 5:24PM
Using off the shelf AA batteries is a good thing.
I have a wireless microsoft mouse and the batteries have lasted me almost a year. Also , I tried one of these mice at an apple store. I didn't get it. And having been a Mac user since the days of the SE... If I can't understand a Macintosh peripheral by just picking it up, then it's not Mac-like. I'll stick with the two button cordless microsoft mouse I have.
Bosco @ Jul 24th 2006 5:24PM
um.. Josh.
It does have a secondary button.
Pay attention.
shibby @ Jul 24th 2006 5:26PM
It does have right click, it just doesn't look like a button.
josh @ Jul 24th 2006 5:33PM
Ah cool. It's hard to tell without reading the fine print.
Didn't Steve Jobs say that he was never going to make a mac mouse with a right click? Glad he finally came around.
Right click is a lot easier and takes less hands than Control+Click. GG Steve =)
Shinig4mi @ Jul 24th 2006 5:35PM
I will not even CONSIDER buying it... The original Mighty Mouse is PURE CRAP.
Never mind the "lift your index to right click" annoyance.... The optical sensor is worse than the one of the first generation of laser mouses that came out (I happen to own one). It requires a mousepad, and not ANY mousepad.... it has to have the right amount of color/texture variation, or else it will drive you mad....
I don't use it... Even old Logitech mice work better.... I was an Apple customer (2 Ipods + Mac mini + b.th. keyb. + m.mouse + IBook), but they have to improve the quality of their products b4 I start buying their stuff again...
=/
Paul @ Jul 24th 2006 5:36PM
Dangit! I just had my wired Mighty Mouse delivered... couldn't decide between that and a bluetooth normal one - wonder how much longer before this comes out?
Tyler @ Jul 24th 2006 5:37PM
I don't see what the big deal is....
Shinig4mi @ Jul 24th 2006 5:38PM
When I said:
"The optical sensor is worse than the one of the first generation of laser mouses that came out",
I meant OPTICAL MOUSES, or better, mice, LOL! Too much beer?
=P

Finally, I'll get one of those as soon as they're on the shelves. Granted, it's about 20 years too late and I've used Apple one-button mice for the last 13 years but I'll certainly spring for this. I like the fact it uses AA batteries instead of some stupid charger that takes up space or a USB port. I've just been using rechargable AA's with my current Apple BT mouse for 2 years and each pair lasts about a month which is perfectly fine for me, and they take 15 minutes to recharge after that.
Charles @ Jul 24th 2006 5:54PM
Yay it can match the wireless kbd.
jonnyboy @ Jul 24th 2006 5:58PM
I've had no problems with the current mighty mouse within the year I've been using it. And believe me, it gets used a lot. I'm sure this product will be great.
Calamier @ Jul 24th 2006 5:58PM
Wiiiiiii!
what a POS... @ Jul 24th 2006 5:59PM
Another Jobs it looks cool but is an overpriced piece of crap product.I`ll stick with the two-button scroll-wheel optical mouse I got at Fry`s on sale for seven bucks.Works great and is two years old.MS wrote the book on how mice should work and THAT is Apple`s biggest drawback.BTW...corded mice react quicker for gaming.Mice are how we interact with our puters(besides the keyboard)and Apple mice suck.GO ZUNE !!!
Iain @ Jul 24th 2006 6:00PM
I have lost my might mouse instructions so I don't know if they all say this but in the back of the "M6" instructions it has the class 1 laser product logo.
Could this be a laser mouse?
Motoi @ Jul 24th 2006 6:02PM
Pitiful is a strange way to put it, because I really like the squeeze triggers. Do you even own one of these?
Callum @ Jul 24th 2006 6:03PM
My mac mini's wireless keyboard / mouse has been running on the original batteries for 6+ months, and in preferances still shows more than 2 bars to go until the juice is out.
check out all the pdfs on that linked site, they did ask for confedentiality on a few things, I guess legally the other documents / photos have to be published.

maybe you shouldn't abuse your pets with your mouse.
put down the optical nunchucks.
Iain @ Jul 24th 2006 6:06PM
Check out the instructions...
This is a Laser Mouse!
Kevin @ Jul 24th 2006 6:08PM
Um. Considering not many companies make a white bluetooth mouse. This is the best option if you want a white bluetooth mouse.
Radtech makes one, it isn't very good.
Logitech made a wireless Mac set. And it is RF, good job Logitech. MS mice are nice, but I don't white a mouse that doesn't match my setup.
My mighty mouse has given me no troubles. So I am a happy customer and it came with my Mac. It has been stated, but the mighty
mouse does have a right click, it just isn't a button.
@Shinig4mi
Ok, so on a normal 2 button mouse don't you use your middle finger to right click? You can do the same thing on the mighty mouse, but you middle finger on the mouse and click.
But oh no you have to left you little index finger. What a cry baby.
Also, they are still quality. Just because they don't function the way you want them to doesn't mean they don't make quality products. My MM is sitting on a piece of cardboard and works just fine. I have also used paper. And the laser works just as good as any other mouse I have had.
Derphead @ Jul 24th 2006 6:43PM
I've never really understood the hate for the mighty mouse, i've used mine on a daily basis for around 10 months now (without a mouse pad) and apart from having to clean the scroll ball about once a fortnight its been great and still works perfect.
Before owning it i went through 2 ms intellimice within 6 months, both times the left click broke. I know what i'd prefer
_man1c_ @ Jul 24th 2006 6:57PM
id like to see them intergrate this mouse into the keyboard. have an all-n-one. that way you could actually surf the web on your couch.
diulei @ Jul 24th 2006 7:26PM
Hmm...considering how expensive the wired Mighty Mouse is, any guesses as to how much this is going to hurt the wallet?
Frank Soprano @ Jul 24th 2006 7:53PM
If the wire one was crap (i own one my 10 year old compaq mouse works better then this C.R.A.P) i can just image all the probelms a bluetooh one wil lgive i can just see it now...
"reports all over the internet are saying that the mighty mouse bluetooth gets extremely hot and it gives you a 3rd degree burn on your hands use with major caution and because of this acid dsrips from teh battery wich then eakes to your keyboard wich then creates a shor ciruit wicch cause your 1500+ overpriced piece iof crap to explode and the only option you have left is to spend yet another 1500+ worth on overpriced crap"
gosh i hate mac i just love their whole image of "collegue students running their bussiness when in reality is a bunch of over weight white man with bald heads wit ha sweta shop full of collegue undergraduates working for 5 bucks an hr"
Jan Peters @ Jul 24th 2006 7:54PM
I believe that this image is fake: it is taken in such a way that the cable sticking out at the top is just not shown.
If it was not fake, I would be happy and buy one the next second!
thuff @ Jul 24th 2006 8:17PM
/shrug i've been using the mighty mouse that came with my quad g5 for a few months now. never had a problem with it. right-clicking and side buttons and all. guess i am not a l33t mouse user.
@narco
you must have forgotten the whole hockey-puck mouse era.
Toholio @ Jul 24th 2006 9:00PM
@Jan Peters:
You didn't look at the linked site did you? Go do that and you'll see that a) It's the FCC's web-site and b) there are many more images there including internal shots and the user's manual.
Shinig4mi @ Jul 24th 2006 9:04PM
@Kevin:
LOL, dude, it appears that you don't own or have ever used a Mighty Mouse!
Your reply:
"Ok, so on a normal 2 button mouse don't you use your middle finger to right click? You can do the same thing on the mighty mouse, but you middle finger on the mouse and click."
You missunderstood everything, mate... The "lift your index to right click" annoyance doesn't refer to my unlikely crazy habbit of right-clicking with my index finger. With a Mighty Mouse, if your index finger is resting on the left click area, you cannot right-click with the middle finger! You have to raise your index finger, if not the right-click is recognized as a left-click.
=P

Well there's your iMac updates for Sept/Oct:
*Bluetooth keyboard & Mighty Mouse
*Slightly increased CoreDuo chip speed/Dual CoreDuo (but likely just a speed increase)
*OS X 10.5
Thank you very much for coming down to our special event, until next year!
NicleT @ Jul 24th 2006 10:08PM
The problem with two AA cells in the cockpit, it's the weight. I develop myself a tendinitis - a kind of "Mouse-elbow" with the first Apple bluetooth mouse. I had to buy a Mighty Mouse - much lighter - to replace it. I don't like those integrated-rechargeable-battery-mouse-and-its-wathever-dock design but they also are much lighter. So maybe there's a compromise to find.
LongshotX @ Jul 24th 2006 10:14PM
Whats up with Apple and these incremental upgrades?
Taylor Brown @ Jul 24th 2006 10:41PM
This would go perfect with my MacBook! I can't wait, yay!
Bryan @ Jul 24th 2006 10:55PM
the ball gets dirty easily. i know how to clean it but it gets dirty too often.
Jim @ Jul 25th 2006 12:13AM
Keep your wired mouse. I have a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. I am surprised how often I have to have a wired mouse to geth my bluetooth mouse running.
I bought a used iMac for my grandson and it came with a super mouse. I tried it and figured he can get a real mouse for himself. I have been using variations of a mouse for over 35 years. The super mouse is the worst ergonomic design so far, in my opinion.

"The super mouse is the worst ergonomic design so far, in my opinion."
i guess you never had the horrific experience of using the hockey puck mouse on an original imac!
rafa @ Jul 25th 2006 5:43AM
I own the original bluetooth mouse, an yes, weight is a serious issue. it´s impossible to get some precise pointing with it. why use 2 AA batts? how about just 1, or better, 1 AAA??? i wouldnt care if the running life shortens a bit.... Apple, stop making heavy bT mouses!
BTW i´m a happy cabled Mighty Mouse user!
Bob @ Jul 25th 2006 7:38AM
I don't think apple remembered why they put those little notches on the side of the mouse when they introduced the mighty mouse. The Sqeeze triggers as you call them are meant for you to be able to grip the mouse, while picking it up and keeping a click down. i.e. when you're click dragging and run out of desk. I do this sometimes so i HAVE so set the squeeze triggers to do nothing. I'm amazing people dont come across this problem more often.
in closing .... the squeeze triggers are an utter waste of electronics.
btw, i rarely have any probs with my my mighty mouse. rolling the ball upside down on a damp bit of cloth always fixes any unresponsiveness i have.
brian @ Jul 25th 2006 8:27AM
I HOPE THIS WON'T STAIN LIKE THE MACBOOKS!
:p
Argelius @ Jul 25th 2006 8:48AM
So, from what I've gathered, this is identical to the corded MM except it's got no cord? i.e. no other enhancemens?
Jerry @ Jul 25th 2006 9:36AM
I have problems with the Mighty Mouse all the time. My 1st one won't scroll down and I have tried everything to clean it but it just wont work. And my second one it wont scroll up. I just gave up and bought a Microsoft mouse. I would certainly wont waste my money for a more expensive bluetooth pice of carp unless they give you a way to clean the inside of the rolling ball.
