Although unique with the controls and huge back library of games, it doesn't have the raw and expensive power that the PS3 or 360 has. I think it's very possible this price point could be achieved and Nintendo could still make a profit off of hardware.

The only problem is that at that price point, you'd have some consumers thinking its "cheap" (in a bad way). They have the a more interactive system that appeals to the 'gamer' and 'not yet a gamer group' that is cheaper than the other systems. so they have a more customers and it cost much less for them to make their system = much more profit. and they seem to have way more backing from other companies which was a problem in the past 10 years. With more than just Nintendo making games for a Nintendo system they are going to make a bundle. i am not a Nintendo fan boy, but i do recognize that they are pretty smart, they dont have the money like microsoft and sony to throw around. The 360 and ps3 have a longer shelf life, but with the money nintendo will make they will be able to invest and improve... maybe a wii lite in a year and half??

bp

Comments on EA exec: Wii to retail for around $170 US?

I don't know...it's not impossible. When pops bought me my Game Gear for $150 I'm pretty sure the Genesis was still pulling in $180 to $200 ( for a $30 to $50 difference).
And for the longest time the original gameboy was $99...I don't think the NES could possibly have been more than $150 at that point (cause it too hovered around $100 for quite a while).

Sides, just imagine the final nail in the PS3's coffin that the ad campaign ascociated with such pricing. A simple white poster with these words...

"You could buy a PS3.

Or, you could buy the worlds most innovative video game console (Wii), plus the worlds most graphically powerful gaming machine (Xbox 360), and the worlds most popular portable (DS).

For the SAME price*

What more can Wii say ?"

Or something to that effect (as for the asterisk, some kind of mail in rebate wil be require to get the collective price below $600, but probably for only about $30). And it's true, "most popular handheld" and most "graphically powerful" are subjective (so don't freak and and bombard we with specs/stats), but aside from specific franchises, those three consoles together offer pretty much everything a gamer could want. Not to say the PS3 won't be an enjoyable machine, but you do have more options with the Wii6DS combo. Portable gamplay and access to Live! are significant advantages in and of themselves. True Sony is working on a new online model, but at this point it could just as easily suck as soar.

Just have to wait and see...

Oddmanout

Comments on EA exec: Wii to retail for around $170 US?

"Wii is basically GameCube 1.25 ... so that price is possible. There's really nothing high tech about it at all."

Well, I wouldn't say its not high tech because it doesn't have the newest tech, but nintendo is on to something. Sony is trying to push the bleeding edge with their PS3, the Xbox is trying to be a media center for everyone else, but nintendo is trying to give everyone a chance to play a video game. It seems they are trying to make it for a family, now would grandpa or your little brother whose 7 really care about HD or 512 megs of flash memory? Nintendo's just selling what people need for simply playing games and I think thats commendable. Unlike most tech today, its not trying to cram everything in, because lets not forget, Nintendo is not a multimedia company, they just make videogames.

Zandriff

Comments on EA exec: Wii to retail for around $170 US?

Either way ... Sony is faltering on the PS3 ($$$Price, BluRay needs an HD panel, which makes the PS# at least a $3,000 investment to take advantage of it). X360 needs Halo 3 to compete and it, will be out until March 2007, and at $399 it is not exactly cheap either.

As someone else mentioned here, the Wii s a gemer console only. The Wii is really not a whole lot more than an upclocked GameCube with more ram and a newer version of the video chip. It's basically built from off the shelf parts. The PS3 and X360 are complete redesigns with ambitious new architectures (read: very expensive) while the Wii is just an upgrade to the GC. Nintendo realized they don't have the hardware R&D budget that Sony or MS do, so they're competing on game quality. As a college student, I currently have no care over HD support or not and the price costs are a big deal; also, the Wii has an online virtual console that, perhaps, might rival XBOX's LiveArcade and allow independent developers to release small games (as I am a hobbyist game programmer, currently).

I know that many people are concerned about the "kiddy-ness" of Nintendo's games, but they obviously have never played the GameCube if they say so. Online play is FREE out of the box, and connects you to everything that the Wii has to offer online. 2. The HDTV makes any transmission look better, but under a survey of 1000 people, nearly half said that could barely tell the difference between a HDTV's transmission compared to a standard TV. Make what you want of that (Wii's graphics will be a little bit better than the Xbox's, sort of a quarter of the way between Xbox and Xbox360).

"Are we going to have to buy a larger storage to store all of the old games you download from their service? Perhaps more storage, but a little extra memory should only cost a few $/£. 2. I suppose Nintendo think that 512Mb is enough for the main target audience, although the upgrade shouldn't be that hard as I said. The PS3 and 360 have totally different hardware inside (think multi-core processors), making them a whole different animal. The Wii does not. It is by all accounts, an overclocked GC. Nothing wrong with that as long as the games are good and "pretty" enough. That's why it's possible that they can sell it at such a lower price.
