If it's already aired (which everything on VOD has), and you set it to record, it's already on your TiVo. Don't take everything so personal. Your desires aren't the only ones that matter here.

VOD also includes movies, and unless I'm recording every show that aires, which I wouldn't be, then VOD will need to be available for those, too. Maybe I see a show that I'm not aware of and decide to watch an episode to see if I like it. VOD would be absolutely necessary, then. See how that works?

Of course, TiVo's guides would be preferrable, but the cable companies programming guides would be necessary to a degree to access VOD and to make these types of purchases that require two-way communications. The bottom line is... TiVo has come up with the first device to give the user a decent cablecard experience, and the only escape for people who want a digital cable ready DVR that doesn't suck as badly as the cable company solutions.

I guess people don't remember how the cable companies used to charge outlet fees for each tv. I thought we were finally over that crap with all of the cable-ready devices out there. Then digital cable comes along. We're back to per-outlet fees because we're forced against our will to take their flaky set-top boxes, and they've resisted opening the system at every step. They gave us one-way cablecards and have fought every step of the way in allowing decent companies like TiVo to make anything good come out of them. Where are the cablecard-PCI devices for those of us that want to roll-our-own DVR? Where are the other cablecard DVR solutions? Where are the cablecard compatible DVD-Recorders? Where are the cablecard compatible D-VHS recorders? It's obvious where they are. They're held up on a drawing board somewhere waiting for the cable companies to cooperate. If you don't believe me, just look at all of the cablecard install horror stories out there. Ask an installer. The cable companies don't want cablecards to work, plain and simple.

This is why I get pissed off when I hear people criticize the feature set or development time of the series 3 TiVo. TiVo has done an incredible job overcoming the evil cable bastards and we should all be happy that someone is out there trying their hardest to give us what we want.

other_beta_tester

Comments on TiVo Series 3 appears on TiVo's page

I just talked with a rep at Tivo and she said it will be out late Sept.
