Actually, for the most part it can. Look at the first graph here: It's response is flat from about 10HZ to nearly 20kHz. Lots of audiophiles like the iPod. It's especially good when using a line out and portable amp.

The gauntlet? Maybe one of the mittens that the kitten lost in the nursery school rhyme. It's a...decent start into the genre, perhaps, but it won't be hard to beat these guys.

Make 'em comfy? Or, make them not comfy, but not butt-ugly? Winner. Warning! I bought a set of Etymotyc ER4-Ps some 3 years ago and that's all they've lasted. The junctions between the left and right wires to the single cable to the plug have become "loose". I don't see any damage but unless I squeeze them at that point I get no sound. I guess that at $300, I was spending the equivalent of $100 per year.
