"Controlling the pipes" as it were is a euphemism for charging more money for less tech. Anyone working on datacom/telecom equipment are holding their stomachs after reading this post.

Fiber optics are still a decade away for small-scale testing and even further for wide-scale implentation. ATT/SBC owns all of the copper out here. This is perfect for a competitor to the always aweful Charter Cable. I hope they roll it out very quickly. I think Verizon is serious about capturing metro areas with fiber. I'll tell you why. Verizion is paying how much for fiber to the home (FIOS)? I think it's close to $20 billion in Capital expense. The cost of building out the components of DSM into the existing infrastructure will be significantly lower.

In 10 to 20 years, fiber's cost will have come down enough to make running it to the home more affordable. In the meantime, companies can run fiber in new developments instead of spending close to $9,000 a home to replace the copper plant.
