MusicForMe cracks AllOfMP3's DRM, hilarity ensues
These sure are good times to be a music-lovin' semi-scofflaw. What with the widely available PlaysForSure and FairPlay workarounds that have cropped up of late, and now this quickly compromised Music for Masses app from AllOfMP3, if you're not getting your music for free, or at least loading it on the device of your choosing, you're not trying hard enough. Apparently AllOfMP3, the shadester digital music retailer from Russia, recently released an app called "Music for the Masses," which allows you to listen to any track in their library free of charge. The proprietary .mp3x DRMed files proved to be quite hackable, and a couple weeks later we have a solution in the cleverly-named form of "MusicForMe" for procuring any 128kbps MP3 of your choosing absolutely free of charge. Of course, it's hard to argue "fair use" here, since the hack basically amounts to stealing from a thief, but in case your personal moral code isn't as squeamish as ours is when it comes to these sort of things, those MP3 are yours for the taking.[Warning: RAR link]

UPDATE: Tipster Cary says Music for Masses has been patched by AllOfMP3 and the update is forced on login. Both previous MusicForMe versions have been kilt.

Monday called, they want their news back.
Sick all the poorly compressed music I can grab!
I wouldn't be surprised if allofmp3 were behind this hack. =)
They wouldn't do that. It would only hurt their business
Beautiful, although I'd be wary of installing software from AllOfMP3. I'd have no problem buying music from them though... not that I've ever done such a thing...
You have to download their software to buy their music...
You don't, actually. Not that I would know from experience or anything.
well at least people will just be getting craptastic 128kbps mp3s ugh.
hilarity ensues? Am I at the right website, or is this Fark?
LOL That's funny :)
engadget: you suck at early news. even i knew this and i live under a rock
I tried their app last week and all tracks were in mono and sounded like crap. I wouldn't even take the time to steal them.
This is not a software site.
Why should Engadget break this first?
Shit they got most of us the FairUse4WM which is much more important than this.
Besides, the ALLofMP3 software sucks and makes it hard to actually DL the files.
Unless it's a really rare foreign album you're better off with BitTorrent.
Didnt work for me. The player says the song is corrupt.
way to rip off of Tucker Max
AllofMP3 is doing this, ONLY to get back at the RIAA for making VISA pull their CC service from their customers.
Good for them! Visa is weak. They are suppose to be in the business of TAKING MY MONEY, not dictating to me how to spend it. “Mind your business VISA”.
Hey, quit dissing the website - I buy shit load of music from them, and I think it's a better alternative to apple's store - you can choose the encription bitrate and the songs come protection free
Well im not an audiophile, and i dont see much of a difference between 128 and 192kbps. So i dont mind. Plus AllofMp3.com has a LOT of old stuff i couldnt find on Usenet.
Also i should mention using the extension "DownThemAll" in Firefox with a .mp3x filter is HEAVEN. Queue up a list of 10 albums in about 1-2 minutes flat and your off. So awesome.
That'd be great if half of their downloads weren't corrupt.
FFS, Copyright infringement is NOT theft!
128k bit rate is what satellite radio sounds like. Sometimes it sounds like 96k, bleh.
More like zero corrupted. If they are corrupted it's on your end because ive been downloading hundreds of songs from them and not one has been corrupted.
Was working great for me but now when i go to put a song in my basked i get this message.
Ordering is temporarily disabled
We are sorry, but the ordering is currently disabled.
The site is undergoing scheduled maintenance. Please check back later.
any one else getting this?
yes it seems that if you download too many songs/albums you get this error. If you create a new account however it works again.
They are sneaky!
So, anyone heard about any workarounds to get around the updated version they just released?
The hack doesn't work with the Updated Version (0.64 Alpha). Its required to download this to play any music, so no free mp3's anymore.
allofmp3 already backuped VISA payments with another Russian company. This buzz around RIAA and VISA only stimulated birth of other Russian online music stores, like for example www.mp3ninja.com, and those do not have problems with VISA either.
have u use http://justmusicstore.com? -u can get a lot of music there . much more then on allofmp3.com
