If you understand the underlying technology of the new high-def screens then you realize that, for example, a 30FPS 1080i signal will look IDENTICAL to a 30FPS 1080P signal. Flickering problems have to do with the older CRT's due to the fading of the light generated as the electron beam moves along. Even monitors that are CRT's eliminate flickering in Interlaced mode if fast enough (plus 85Hz).

The only advantage for video games would be if the Frames Per Second where increased but since you can already get 60FPS in interlaced mode I don't understand the big deal.

My understanding is that the only advantage to having 1080p is for DVD's or HDTV:
1) 1080p can due to the format created generate 60 frames of video per second versus only 30 frames per second for 1080i (however, I'm not expecting much 1080p HDTV for years)
2) Selecting Interlaced hands over the de-interlacing to the televisions video processing. However, I'm not expecting any de-interlacing errors on high-def content.

Perhaps I've missed something but I can NOT SEE ANY BENEFIT to having 1080p over 1080i in a video gaming console.

Also: http://blog.hometheatermag.com/geoffreymorrison/

Jeffrey Byers

Comments on

"for example, a 30FPS 1080i signal will look IDENTICAL to a 30FPS 1080P signal"

Thats just not true. 30FPS 1080p will look the same as 60FPS 1080i aslong as it came from a progressive source like film.
