I help my friend build one of these with an older 15in viewsonic screen that had a broken backlight and it looks 10X better then the projectors they have at my college ($2000 units). Making the screen itself would be the tricky part... you would have to "grind" the glass so that the image would show up on it. I have done small pieces of ground glass for Depth Of Field adapters for small camcorders. I'll have to see in the end, and have to do some research on distances. Those subpixels and the gaps between them are going to get _really_big_ when thrown onto a wall  several feet away. This is often referred to as the "screen door effect"<br><br>That is why "real" LCD projectors use dichroic mirrors and three microdisplays. The exception of course is if you use an older display with low resolution. Most from the past 3 or 4 years will produce a display on par with 3 panel commercial projectors. <br><br>And for everybody who has an issue with the length of the projector, I thought this was a hacker site. If there is a problem, work out a solution. For example, it should be possible to cut the length in half (at the expense of added height), by placing the light and lcd screen in an upper portion of the box, and using a mirror to reflect the light onto a fresnel in a lower portion of the box. Or possibly even directly onto the projection lens.<br>Assuming the lenses are of decent quality, the weak part of most diy projectors is the light source. I think it's SVGA.
