You generate heat due to ineffieciencies in converting AC to DC, you generate heat whenever whenever you use power in any of the components. I think it's a rather interesting question as to how loud it's going to be. I would assume if Msft were to put in a decent DVD drive it would be a lot quieter. I can't wait to get me one but I have to find a place to hide this old HIFI stereo or beta max player looking peice of cheap plastic first.  Nice cheap plastic flip up cover that really makes it sleek. Also what is with the shiny black plastic. On the first day it'll have fingerprints all over it, but the second week it'll have little scratches everywhere and the cheap little plastic door covering the card slots will be broken.
