So, Cingular's finally announced their 8525 -- what a relief. As we suspected, it'll set you back $399 (with two year contract -- sorry, no price yet listed with 1 year or no contract) when it launches November 16th but LAPTOP has the first official review of the unit, which resulted in a 4/5 star rating. There isn't really much to tell here that one didn't already know (except that the ok key underneath the wheel is
now a deactivated Push-to-Talk button), but just in case you hadn't been following the Hermes, it's generally regarded as a pretty slick piece of kit. Outside of the usual software package, you can, of course, hook up with MobiTV, Good, and any other supported services on Cingular's network. We definitely take issue with the five hour talk time, though, our Hermes is lucky to get a couple (and with data, forget about it). Still, for your $400 you're unlikely to find a hotter Pocket PC phone on the US market.

Finally! I skipped the 8125 because I wanted 802.11G, Bluetooth 2.0,and HSDPA. I'll grab this as soon as I can. Assuming the date is real this time.
Price sans contract?
P.S.: Bout f'ingtime Cingular. Now howds about my dang 3G in STL?
sweet! I might retire my ever-so-aging RAZR and finally be a cool kid with a bad ass phone come the holidays! Just looks more aesthetically pleasing over the 8125, too.
very true about the poor battery life - I get about 2 days standby with no/ limited data use (and not heavy voice), and about 5 hours standby/ usage with Goodlink enabled.
This sucks-I just dropped 700 bucks for a P990 only to find out the UMTS doesn't work on Cingular's 3G band(1900) and they release this a week later. I wish it had the video phone camera-imagine teleconferencing in to your office from anywhere that has 3G.
There is a magical mystical place where used cell phones sell like a PS3 on November 17th.. that place my friend, is eBay =)
Is there push email?
Price without contract: $559.00
Yes, there is push email.
How does this compare sizewise to the 8125?
Alcaron
Saint Louis has been 3G since November 2nd. My LG CU500 has been working perfectly.
As I understand it with the 8125, when you buy this phone for the 2 year contract price, you must get an unlimited data plan and a voice plan of $39.99 or greater.
Do you have to follow those same rules if you buy the phone unlocked or pay full retail for it?
Why doesn't the review mention UMTS? Their tests claimed to fall back to EDGE out of HSDPA coverage. I'm surprised that a UMTS area didn't overlap.
Anyone got links to HSDPA coverage maps?
Any more experienced wireless geeks care to venture a guess when we're going to see a version of these in Canada?
IM WONDERING IF THERE IS AN ADVANTAGE TO BUYING THE PHONE UNLOCKED. RATHER THEN FROM CINGULAR...WILL THE SECOND CAMERA WORK FOR VIDEO CONFR. ON THE UNLUCKED VERSION? WILL THE UNLOCKED VER. BE CAPABLED OF USING ALL OF CINGULARS EXTRAS STUFF LIKE MOBITV ETC?
My contact here in STL says they don't have a firm date on it yet, but they will place my order as soon as they get the info. I checked cingular's website and did not find STL to be one of the 3G areas... Maybe the online coverage map is not up-to-date?
This phone does not do UMTS, quadband GSM/EDGE/HSDPA are it.
Push Email is a capability of Windows Mobile 5 AKU2 (which any modern windows mobile device features) and not specific to the device. The extra upcharging features that carries sell when they sell 'push email' are an interim Exchange server you hook your devices up to. If your company runs an Exchange server this additional service (and fee) is not necessary.
The device is virtually identical in size to the 8125. The shell is basically a hybrid of the Wizard shell (8125, MDA etc) and the Apache shell (XV6700).
As far as buying the device unlocked goes, theres not really a bonus unless you are looking for the front mounted camera for video calling. All HTC devices have been hacked with many people making software unlocks so they can be used on other carriers.
I'm buying one of these as soon as they come in, true my 8125 squeezes out more battery life but you can't compete with HSDPA.
E Malave Jr,
Check with your cingular store most have a 30 day return/exchange policy. Thats the only reason I bought the 8125 a week ago, because they said i could exchange it when they got the 8525 in.
Is there HSDPA in Los Angeles?
Actually it looks like I was mistaken about UMTS. The phone WILL support UMTS with the Cingular shipping rom. The other Hermes devices didn't get it until a recent rom either.
Totally hideous design. I'll stick with my Verizon xv6700.
Is this phone the same as the iMate JasJar and the HTC Tytn? Can the push-to-talk feature possible to be activated? Is there anything other than the push-to-talk feature that doesn't normally work?
I live in Dubai and this phone is 900 dollars. We have the push-to-talk service here so I was wondering if I would be able to use that feature when it says it is deactivated.
I used to live in the U.S. for 18 years and have noticed that even though the technology comes to the U.S. later it is still a lot cheaper than overseas.
Buy this now and buy the cingular 9525 in 2007..... Read on!
Cingular is also planning ahead for its first trials of HSDPA's sister technology, high-speed uplink packet access (HSUPA), culminating in a launch following a dual network and handset upgrade path. HSUPA trials could come by the end of next year, Rinne said, and Cingular's vendors are already preparing.
That timing would work very well with our HSUPA product development, said Toby Seay, the Ericsson vice president responsible for the Cingular account. We'll certainly be supporting trials in HSUPA in that time frame.
I get abt 14 hrs of use out of my new 8525 with goodlink email. Expected more!
