Very smart.

Apple's phone, if it does come out, is not going to be the be-all-and-end-all of phones. It is simply going to be a basic phone that also has an iPod integrated into it. It's going to be for those people who like to carry both their iPod and their cellphone all the time. Personally, I am that sort of a person. It's small. If you can't carry it around plus a cellphone, you really are lazy.

There's little to no purpose for an iPhone, and it would directly compete with the Shuffle and Nano. And most phones have flash memory, and the biggest cell phone-sized removable memory (MicroSD) comes in 2GB. Wow, so I can carry as much as a Nano? Wippee! And it will cost at least $300 (the usual price of an MP3 playing bluetooth phone).

I think this has been misread. They might be making "wireless" componets, but I highly doubt a phone. What would they pick? CDMA? GSM? Good luck with that. The biggest CDMA provider (Verizon) forces a uniform UI and cripples bluetooth SPECIFICALLY because of song transfers. Cingular just started their music service, so they really don't want to carry a competitor's phone do they? So that leaves Sprint, Alltel, and T-Mobile: the second tier cell phone companies and not enough people to carve out a profit.

So what is Apple left with? Offering it to the gray market, those people who import their phones. And if history has proven anything, Apple really doesn't like mobile phones. See the iTunes program on the ROKR and SLVR: not user friendly, lacking the "glossy finish", and has a song cap limit.

And Apple really can't control a phone and it's firmware like they can with the rest of their ahrdware. They would have to go through the cell phone provider, and Apple doesn't seem like the child that lieks to share things.

If they do end up releasing a phone, I will be amazed and expecting them to port OSX to the general x86 platform (OFFICIALLY).

shirizaki

Comments on

shirizaki-

VZW does not enforce the uniform UI on all their phones - see the Blackberry devices, or any WinMo device.
