I noticed a good sale on a namebrand 42" Plasmas at CircuitCity, an LG and a Panasonic currently selling for $1299 but with a 10% coupon that can be found online brings it down to $1170.

I think this is an awesome price for namebrand plasmas, also take into account that the LG comes with 2 years warranty! @Westinghouse 1080p comments above: check the Best Buy add again, that is the "little brother" 720p set not the 42" 1080p set from what I saw. For those that don't care about 720/1080 it is still a good panel.

you can never keep up with technology. The minute you put it in your cart, there is something better on the shelf. Just enjoy the tv and be happy with what you have. I bought my 30 inch westinghouse from bestbuy in April of 05 for 1099 with a free samsung home theatre. Now you can find 42" for 1k or less. :shrugs shoulders:

And i do believe that the Best Buy Westinghouse TV WAS THE 1080P model. Best Buy is out there policing their leaked circulars, so I only saw it up there quickly. Hell for 1499 that Tv is steal, for 999 its highway robbery. The model numbers are almost always very similar VP42 vs. P42, etc. They list a bunch of unimportant technical specs and bury the important stuff.

To me, they're just jerking consumers around, trying to offload the marginal stuff and what looks like a good deal, but you can bet the companies involved are still making money. On a 42" display, 720p is more than enough realistically. You'd get more for your money buying a higher quality (contrast and response time) 720p display than upping for being able to handle 1080p resolution (with the same contrast and response time).

Of course the story changes for 50+" displays.

Still, if you buy a 42" 720p (that can scale 1080i), I think you're good to go for a very long time.

ps: they'll never broadcast in 1080p b/c it's just entirely too much bandwidth. The only place you'll be getting that for a VERY long time is on HDDVD and BRD.
