4GB iriver clix now available
As expected, the caps-averse iriver has finally pushed its new 4GB clix portable media player out the door, with only $200 separating it from iriver and you. The specs, in case you missed them, include a 2.2-inch QVGA display, built-in FM tuner, voice recorder, a promised 25 hours of battery life, and support for MP3, WMA, ASF, and OGG music files, as well as MPEG-4 "simple profile" QVGA video -- not to mention the inclusion of a variety of Flash games. Also available are a couple of clix accessories, including a cradle (you'll need it if you want line in/out) and an FM transmitter and car charger. The accessory sure to see the most use, however, is the screen cleaner iriver's seen fit to throw in free of charge.

What does Nintendo have to do with PMPs?
_habit_ @ Nov 22nd 2006 7:25PM
As much as I'd love a PMP, this one especially... if I'm going to get a Wii, I won't be able to afford this thing too :(

Actually, the iriver Clix Gen 2 has a really bright screen with really small pixels. It's really comfortable to watch even whole movies on it.

I have the earlier model iRiver U10. Love it. It is a beautiful device. Very innovative user interface controls. Sound quality is great. I use that to store photos and video clips too. Now that the memory is up to 4G, so much the better. Highly recommend this to anyone looking for a cool MP3 player.

No Mass Storage? No deal. Other than that it looks slick.

check p. 12 of the manual @ http://www.iriveramerica.com/images/pdf/iriver_clix_Manual.pdf - it *does* act as a portable storage device
tekdroid @ Nov 23rd 2006 7:21AM
for data files, yes. For playable audio. No. Windows Media Player is a requirement (the manual shows no other way to get playable audio on there - unless I'm missing something.
Nia7 @ Feb 12th 2008 6:22AM
You're not right - using WMP to transfer song is only one way. You can explore your clix by My Computer and add songs, videos, pics, ebooks and games easily. I've just notticed that ;)

I have just been to the iRiver site and download their new software lyrics manager (LDB) for use with U10. It is amazing. I can download lyrics off the internet and tag that with the song. As the song is being played, it displays the lyrics line by line. Very cool!
boghy @ Feb 13th 2007 3:37PM
How did u do that? I have an iriver clix U10 an i've downloaded iriver LDB manager. I was able to put lyrics into the songs in this program and it's ok. I'vw copied the songs into the player then and they don't work. What could be the problem? Can you give me some tips? Thanx.

I read the manual and it did not say anything about shuffling the pictures during a slideshow or about being able to listen to audio while watching a slideshow (aka "walk and chew gum at the same time").
Eric @ Nov 23rd 2006 1:52AM
Yea, I've had the 2G version for a little while now, and while it doesn't show up as a drive when you plug it in, it's easy enough to just go to "Portable Devices \ iRiver Clix Files" off of My Computer and copy, delete, paste, create directories, copy whatever you want to it. The only caveat is that it only works in Windows (as far as I know).
So, the lack of UMS isn't a huge deal if you have a Windows box to connect it to.
Sweetdelight @ Nov 23rd 2006 12:22PM
UGH, Please shush.
YOU DO NOT NEED WINDOWS MEDIA Or Windows XP, after you do a simple thing, go to the iriver website, download FIRMWARE upgrade, now, you can change the device to a UMS device, and use it on linux, whatever, drag drop, go nuts HOWEVER changing it to UMS, you cannot use the ability to play DRM music. The UMS is a feature that most europeans have, therefor this firmware change exists. Once you change it to UMS, you dont have to put it near a windows machine if you don't want to, or use windows media player
tekdroid @ Nov 23rd 2006 5:43PM
yeh, if it does support Mass Storage mode fortransferring playable music, they sure haven't made it obvious. No mention of it in their firmware history for the clix:
http://www.iriveramerica.com/support/ultra/clix_history.aspx
So, unless somebody has actually used the device and transferred playable tracks to the deivice without using Windows Media Player (or Windows), it would seem Windows and Windows Media Player are requirements to use this device, just like thier website says.
miko @ Nov 23rd 2006 7:08PM
In previous versions of this device, there has been mass storage versions, and versions requiring WMP. So it's quite possible, like previous versions, that this is BOTH!
As far as I know the US got the version requiring WMP, and most other places had the browsable version.
miko @ Nov 23rd 2006 10:10PM
Can you separate 2gb clix, and 4gb clix? Do you own a 4gb version? If they've done it before, why couldn't they do it again?
God, is it moron day?
