It's not their fault that the technology required to make these things has not fallen in pricing, ie OLED displays. People are calling this vaporware, but these people have a track record of bring real products to market and working with some big name companies with their design. They came out with the 3 button display as a precursor. I bet you they are more anoid with the prices of OLED than we are with them coming out with their product. Pricing of OLED displays is the single factor of why these things are going to be expensive, and they can't take a loss on these things like a bigger company could do in order to get them out the door.

Jeff O'Hara

Comments on Optimus 103 keyboard demands $1,200 pricetag -- yes, you read that right

I thought they had axed the oled displays?

Richard

Comments on Optimus 103 keyboard demands $1,200 pricetag -- yes, you read that right

Sorry I disagree that Art Lebedev “deserves credit here”. The stuff they have done for other people is somewhat cool but, from what I can tell, all of their Studio products have been way overplayed and more about getting attention than they are about function. (Probably to score enough attention to keep getting paying jobs.)

Yeah they came out with the button pad. Call me a cynic but personally, I was surprised they made it that far. Then I read reviews which noted that the usable functions were far, far below what was promised and it started to make some sense. It has been obvious for months that this product is same thing - fantastic promise vs harsh reality.

It would be one thing if it were monochrome because the color version would have cost $1,200. However, the fact that first they cut the color and then come out at this absurd price makes it all too obvious that the full color version wasn’t remotely feasible for them from the very beginning. Hey it is still a great idea but call it a flagship concept or studio showpiece and be upfront about it! Don’t be churn out well-timed and tantalizing press releases without being honest about what you are up to. Don’t be coy at all and pretend even slightly that you are bringing magic to the masses!

On a side note, is it possible at all to temper the amount of press this sort of place gets? I think it is funny that Engadget calls this thing “uber hyped” since they have pretty much posted the various glowing press releases straight Lebedev itself. Engadget, you are great and I realize that this is an all-time-gadget-dreamy-the-way-the-world-should-be product and that you can’t comment editorially on everything...BUT it would be nice if once and a while you could at least acknowledge when you have played a big part in the “uber hyping” of something. Especially when, as in this case, it is clear (ages ago IMHO) that said “uber hyped” object was more about scoring press than manufacturing a really useful product. Lebedev & Co. could care less what I think of these shenanigans but a bit of restraint from the likes of you might talk some sense into them. Just a thought.

Full disclosure – Already been drinking Lebedev hateraid

http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/19/here-comes-the-upravlator/2#comments

helio9000

Comments on Optimus 103 keyboard demands $1,200 pricetag -- yes, you read that right

People who buy BMW do not buy 1200 dollar keyboards.
Perhaps people with Ferraris and Aston Martins... maybe if they were the "new money" and were not pragmatic, they'd do it but come on... The people who buy a BMW when a VW will do are buying Logitec G15s for 5x the cost of a normal keyboard. I myself have a nice Saitek Eclipse because I find it comfortable, simple and compact and I spend a lot of time on the computer and type very quickly, so a nice keyboard is meaningful.

This keyboard is more like someone buying a 150hp Ferrari for $150k because it's got some nice body styling and was "handcrafted." Only the car at least would be a status symbol, which would be the only reason to buy it.

They killed all the features that excited people and then priced themselves into the stratosphere. They might sell a small handful to the idiots who also bought a PS3 on eBay for $3500 to avoid waiting a few weeks, but I doubt even that will happen. It's unfortunate, but this keyboard, instead of being a pricy bit of electronics that a lot would simply consider to be an expensive indulgence, will be a total flop.

Hopefully a larger manufacturer can pick up the idea and produce it at a lower cost. "I want a 113 key keyboard with full colour oled displays on every single keys (even the keys for which putting a display would be illogical) and I want full featured open sourced drivers for my mac and my pc and windows and dos and linux and my kitchen sink on release day, and I want to pay no more than $99.95 and..."

I want and I want and I want and I want and I want and I want.

No-one seems to *understand* what goes in to designing and designing-for-manufacture and sourcing components and manufacturing and shipping and selling a product so innovative as this. Complex consumer-electronics projects built from scratch like this are *phenomenally* expensive. No-one seems to care that at $1200 / unit they're probably making a mind-bogglingly big loss on the first ten thousand units and that they probably had to beg and plead and sign over their first born children to their accountants just to be allowed to run with this.

These guys have been honest and open and up-front *all* the way through the development process.
