Meet your shiny new 2007 HTCs
If the X7500 "Athena" somehow managed to fail to attract your attention and you found the Vox, Libra, Love, and Cavailer positively forgettable, first verify that you have a pulse (because we really don't think that's normal) then check this out: HTC's 2007 arsenal is shaping up to be a doozy, with several previously-unknown models stepping into the spotlight. First up is the "Kaiser" (pictured top left), a follow-on to the Hermes that adds GPS -- a feature that's becoming increasingly common in high-end Pocket PCs. The "Elf" (top right) and "Panda" (not pictured) are midrange devices; they'll lack 3G radios, but the Panda's claim to fame will be a giant QVGA display that weighs in at well over 3 inches, while the Elf makes a name for itself with a fashion-friendly design and a touchpad in place of the typical d-pad. The "Wings" (bottom left) will ultimately take the torch from the Vox -- yes, the still-unreleased Vox -- by adding 3G, GPS, and a beefier processor. Finally, a new clamshell Smartphone will pick up where the Star Trek left off, rocking a GPS receiver and more wireless radios than its predecessor. If you can't find yourself an '07 HTC to your liking now, well... that's just crazy talk, but we know a Finnish outfit that might like your business.

Ug. HTC frustrates me ever so much with their awesome shiny hardware, but using Windows Mobile for their OS. Come on, HTC and get with the program. Can't you make a device with Palm OS, Symbian, Qutopia, ALP. RIM...really ANYTHING but Windows? Seriously, this is like seeing a Rolls Royce with a lawnmower engine in it.
Well.. I guess I could start using Windows for my phone. Of course, I could also stab myself in the eye with a red hot soldering iron.

They have to work on their products names. Panda? Kaiser? LOL.

Any chance any of these will be on Sprint? Damn.... I'm going to have to change services aren't I?
space @ Dec 29th 2006 2:09PM
but i bet they all only have at most 192 mb of memory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's almost 2007 and to not be able to find a ppc smartphone with at least a gig for these prices is pathetic. someone please brighten my day and tell me it's coming very soon. :(

Not one CDMA phone spoken about, I get sick and tired of hearing about this GSM crap with their high latency data networks

Right now I've got a cingular 8125, but i've been drooling over a 8525 for weeks now(actually one of the non branded european flavors...) Do you think I should buy it, or will I just be in the same boat in 3 months. I mean I know that no matter what I buy theres going to be something better, but are there any major leaps in the near future? IE: greater memory, drastic proccesor improvement, stuff like that?

i couldn't agree more with "space". if these type of devices are ever going to really break through in the marketplace, they need to get some proper memory in there. 1 gig would be a reasonable starting point, but i'd love to see 4 gigs! if the iPod nano can do it, so should a smart-phone/pda.

which will be the successor to the ppc 6700 ?
Sonia Foxworth @ Dec 29th 2006 11:47PM
i have heard of the ppc 6800 in the works

oh man i just got my (orange M3100) hermes... and now the new one has gps, hopefully these will be delayed heavily. would be nice to see some pictures of what replaces the universal though.

That Kaiser better have the Samsung 400Mhz proc, and not that piece of crap OMAP, or it's going to be a stupid, worthless doorstop.
Z @ Dec 29th 2006 7:48PM
And can we get some decent RAM in the phones for once? Can we manage to get past the lame-ass 64MB mark???
It's long overdue and these devices cannot run at their peak with only 64MB RAM. We need at least 128MB, and we need to start seeing 1-2GB on the ROM side.

I hate it when cdma users complain about anything! holding back the evolution of technology so 1 or 2 phones can be made and inevitably fail miserably. sort of like the ppc6700 which is a hunk of crap that my company was suckered into buying 40 units.
P.S. there is a new ppc unit coming out you poor unfortunate fools on the cdma network. http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/13/utstarcom-reveals-htc-6800-wizard-followup-will-be-herald/

Hmm, Kaiser seems to be the P3600 (Trinity) with a Keyboard (hence thicker)... Why release the Kaiser?
