Alongside some
larger PC and
HDTV LCDs, Viewsonic today released a range of 55-series LCDs, specifically the VX2255wmh/b and the VX2055wmh/b. If you know gadget designations, you'll already have guessed that these are 20- and 22-inch panels: what you can't tell from the numbers is that each display features an integrated 1.3-megapixel camera and a microphone. We grabbed a shot of the VX2255 at Viewsonic's stand a few hours back and if you'll take a look, you'll see that it has a similar setup to a
MacBook's iSight and microphone configuration. Other than pre-empting any potential Apple Cinema Display updates that may / may not
appear shortly, the 55s both have 1680 x 1050 resolutions, a new ergonomic base with 360 degree swivel, 160 degree vertical / horizontal viewing angles, 300 cd/m2 brightness, 1000:1 contrast ratios, and the most basic of connection standards: VGA and DVI. No word on pricing or availability yet, although as always we'd like assume that "low" and "soon" will be revealed to be the case.

Nice! Once I get news on response time I'll probably get one of these.

Whoa, you can see the lack of brightness from that pick. 300 cd/m2? Too dark for me.

It looks like the photographer used a flash (I see reflections on the stand), and due to that I think the camera may have chose a fast shutter speed which would make even a 600 cd/m2 screen appear dark. I just bought two Sceptre x20's which offer up exactly the same specs minus the cam and mic, and they seem plenty bright to me.
Integrated webcams are nice but I hope they aimed it the right way -- my laptop (Clevo M57U) has one and with the LCD tilted for optimal picture, the webcam shows the top of my head.

Are there actually people in the world who want a camera on them every second that they are on their computer?
Are there actually people who think their Windows machines are secure enough to prevent someone from cracking them and observing everything visible through the webcam?
There's a reason I don't have a webcam, anywhere, at all. It's bad enough that people have to meet me face to face on occasion 8^)
